Apparently, the folks at Desktop Review don't think you need more than 2-3 GB of RAM for any mainstream gaming/editing build. I personally don't like anything less than 4GB for extreme multitasking/gaming, I use 8GB because it doesn't hurt to have more.

Was wondering what the community around here sticks to?

To clarify, this is not counting VRAM and any onboard memory for other devices/hardware... just the total of your installed RAM modules.

the more the better. i rather take quantity over speed. which is why i run 24gb of 1333 over 4gb of 2400. i don't think you can run anything on 4gb anymore. It's also cheaper to buy more most the time than waste money on 2fps what will be outperformed in 6 months by a new card.

I have 4GB in my non-gaming laptop running Windows 7. I had 8GB on my gaming desktop on Windows 7. I also have 2GB in my parents non-gaming desktop on Windows XP. On 2GB ram, my laptop was slllooooowwwww.

I use 8 GB in my gaming rig - game load times are noticeably faster with 4 GB versus 8 GB. I also run VMs from time to time and don't like hitting swap.

If you have a 64 bit OS then 8-24GB is nice although anything over 8GB is used by Windows for paging and system stuff.

If you have a 32 bit OS then anything over 4GB is a waste of $$$
