775 CPU fan

Hi guys I don't know much about over-clocking or installing a cpu fan I have watched youtube videoes on it I'm simply not confident, but I'm willing to give it a try

My SPECS

G31M-GS mATX mobo

standard intel cpu fan

 

My problem is that the current fan is too noisy, I want to change heatsink and fan, I found through forums and such that this is good "ARCTIC COOLING FREEZER 7 PRO REV 2.0"

 

except my mobo is mATX I'm not sure that it fits it. those that are familiar or have experience with this

please help me out

 

those that know of a good cpu fan please do suggest them

First thing I would do is clean any dust out of the stock cooler to see if that helps things, then go in the bios and see if there is a way to turn the speed of the fan down. The Arctic freezer 7 is ok but the coolermaster hyper 212 + is much better for only a little more, some people have recommended the sunbeam core contac too. It would help a lot to know the rest of the specs such as what cpu and power supply before anyone can recommend you any parts.

now I'm just gonna check out the suggested fans

 

Ive checked out Owenisbads suggestion, seems to be better than the artic freezer 7 2.0 and found coolermaster hyper 212 + actually cheaper, it was for £15.99 on play

and guys do keep in mind that I have a microATX formfactor mobo, the hyper 212+ dimensions were 120 x 79.7 x 158.5 mm (L x W x H) while the artic freezer 7 2.0 were 109 x 95 x 125 mm (L x W x H) and as I mentioned I dunno much about PCs that is why asking for help so please explain if these would fit in my pc

Which case? Your mobo form-factor normally does not have an effect on which heatsink fan you can use. It's typically your Case (width) and RAM (height for clearance). ;)

 

I am running a Hyper 212+ myself, and, it offers far better performance than it's price suggests.

You won't have any problems with your motherboard, but we need to know what case you have; the cooler might go past your side panel...

 

I have no idea what it is called since it was a ready made PC but it is very wide, in fact the case has another fan over the left side with a nozzle or what ever it is called directly over the CPU fan, the PC also has Graphics card a gt 220 with sizes of Height = 4.376 inches, Length = 6.6 inches. based on this the case seems to be 5 to 6 inches wide.

It is best to measure the space that the case where the new heat sink is being installed has.

 

How can the distance be measured? With the use of a plumb line and a 30 cm ruler. Take a piece of string about 50cm and tie a weight (large eraser?) on one end. Remove the case side panel. Touch the string end without the weight to the top edge of the case and allow the string to stop swinging. Put the ruler end perpendicular on the mobo and read where the string lines up on the ruler. That is the rough distance of space available to install a heat sink in the case. The exact distance will need the ruler tip measured and added to the rough distance, and also the socket and cpu height subtracted from the rough distance. I would guess the socket and cpu height is ~5mm.

 

The ram space is going to be difficult to figure out. Plain ddr2 ram is ~30mm h, and the hs (heat sink) has a 37 mm h from the top of the cpu to the bottom of the hs fins. The width ....have to leave now I will return tomorrow and see if you still need further help.

The cm (cooler master) hs is taller and this benefit can result in the hs fins resting above the ram (this hs is 37mm h from the top of the cpu to the bottom of the hs fins); However, the extra 5mm width per side could end up making a ram slot unusable.

The af (artic freezer) hs is smaller in height and can mean a wider range of cases can accommodate the hs. while the af hs is 5mm smaller in width per side the lower height will mean the hs will not rest above the ram.

 

The cm hs is 120 mm wide. Half the distance will be 60mm. The 60mm is from the center of the cpu and then outward. I estimate the heat pipe to be 5mm back from the end because a fan screw head is ~2.5mm, so that space appears to be 5mm. Now a measurement of 55mm from the center of the cpu will give an idea of where the hs heat pipe will reach.

 

The af hs is 109mm wide. Half the distance will be 54.5mm. The 54.5mm is from the center of the cpu and then outward. This hs is not high enough to rest above the ram so the distance of 54.5 should be used to determine what component (ram or the other side could have a heatsink on the mobo) will be affected by the installation.
