c0ld Posted February 3, 2004 Posted February 3, 2004 I noticed this site is big on Folding, but not SETI and I was wondering why, so I start this thread for you to post your arguments in! I will start () First off I must say I am quite the cynic, which affects my vote. I vote SETI becuase it would own to meet another intelligent race. The reason I dislike Folding is becuase all people die eventually, so why prolong the lives of those who would die early? Chances are they'd live in pain or have to take pills or something every day to stay alive, which is a pretty crappy life. If I had some protien disease I still wouldn't run Folding. I hate people that do things like that.. Like taht guy that played Superman in the old movies.. Christopher Reeve. He didn't give a crap about peraplegics(?)[if that's what he is.. I can't remember] before his accident, and now he's got a nice foundation for them or something of the sort. It pisses me off. d3bruts1d Posted February 3, 2004 Posted February 3, 2004 We were big on SETI a long time ago. - The SETI program is (or was) coming to an end. - We're a high ranked team on F@H (top 35). Do you even undertsand what the F@H project is trying to acomplish? Yes, we are all going to die, but why not have the chance to live our lives without the risk of Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, Lou Gehrig's Disease (ALS), and Parkinson's Disease? I've seen 1st hand what a person and their family goes through with Alzheimer's (Step-Mother's father) and Parkinson's (My mother's father, my grandfather). I'd rather not see anyone else go through that. The SETI@Home program has a very minute chance of finding any form of ET since it only covers a limited area of space. They've got supercomputers looking at the rest of space with the real SETI program... if anyone were to find anything, it'd more likly be them. Each member is free to participate in any/all projects, the choice is yours.
c0ld Posted February 3, 2004 Posted February 3, 2004 Now I wonder if your view on Folding would be the same if no one in your family had any of the diseases Folding looks at?
syneze Posted February 3, 2004 Posted February 3, 2004 The reason I dislike Folding is becuase all people die eventually, so why prolong the lives of those who would die early? Really, are you sniffing glue or something? The point is to find a CURE so they don't die early you meathead. One neat thing about finding cures is that you don't have to live in pain. And sometimes you don't even need a cure. Look at diabetics...most of them can lead a totally healthy and long life due to the research efforts of people who want to make a difference. Now I wonder if your view on Folding would be the same if no one in your family had any of the diseases Folding looks at? Wow, you really are a cynic. Ever heard of humanity? caffeinejunkie Posted February 3, 2004 Posted February 3, 2004 I do folding because it is more realistic than seti. Yeah seti is cool and all but i would rather put my cpu cycles on something we know that can be accomplished. I also know the affects of these diseaes my uncle's father had Alzheimer's in the last years of his life he couldn't remember the name of his grandkids, kids, or even his wife. Right now my uncle is sorta fighting cancer. By sorta i mean cancer is winning he has lung cancer which is very hard to cure and he was doing fine for a year then last month the doctors told him he has 3 months to live. Right now he is in the hospital with so much morphine in him that he wouldn't even know if you were there ( he is in that much pain ). Atleast he is 54 and has lived an almost full life just think of kids who are diagnosed with cancer at like age 9 they have experienced nothing in life and they will probbaly die without really living. Wouldn't you rather have your computer help to give those kids a real life rather then search for something we don't even know exists. I would but thats just me. Ph33rh4x Posted February 3, 2004 Posted February 3, 2004 Probably. nobody in my family has any of those diseases but i still participate in folding just because i know it could help some people live better lives. also the competition is nice too, but thats just some added fun

Ever heard of humanity? k um first of all i agree with cold.peole will die.. and why make htem live longer? there are already to much humans on this planet. and the more humans. the more we will destroy earth.. the more resources we will use up.. etc. we already live longer than we are supposed to. second of all. these diseases were caused by guess who? HUMANS. for example mad cow is caused by feading cows COWS. CANABILISM~ and whos fault is that? humans! when old cows die. they are ground up and fed back to the other cows and thi scauses mad cow. If we are gona die. we might as well die. Prolonging our lives will create new diseases... we have created a lot of diseases by trying to cure them.l also. syneze you shouldnt be calin cold a "meat head' and unhumaine because he has a different opinion than you.l
caffeinejunkie Posted February 3, 2004 Posted February 3, 2004 road kills i'm sure if you had one of those diseaes you be singing a very different tune.

It is just becoming a more intregrated application called bonic and i though i might add that we can live up to 120 years Edited February 3, 2004 by Kevin_E_Cramer
anthony Posted February 3, 2004 Posted February 3, 2004 (edited) road kills i'm sure if you had one of those diseaes you be singing a very different tune. actually i probally would. yes i know people suffer from it. but death is something we all have to live with.. along with pain. Dignan Posted February 3, 2004 Posted February 3, 2004 Well I don't have anyone I know that has any of these diseases that could be cured by protein mis-folding, yet I find it nice to participate in as a group towards a goal and help the general quality of life among humans too. There are also basic steps to curing diseases which sustaining people is usually a first step. So what if they pop pills to stay alive, they are waiting for a cure that comes from the same idea thats helping them stay alive now... For you to rip off Maddox with the whole christopher reives thing (though you may agree with him it's still his view to the "t") I find quite funny... You've got all the fervour and passion without the menatal grasp on it to make a good point about anything... I vote SETI becuase it would own to meet another intelligent race. Your only reason you would do seti is because is because it would "own" to meet another intelligent race... If I was an intelligent race looking for people that would totally "own" to meet, I wouldn't care to meet people that don't look after themselves first... It's too bad when all your efforts into seti don't pay off because you are in a hospital bed too crippled with Alzheimers to meet our "new friends" You call yourself a cynic, I call it uninformed... Side note: I was so tempted to comment on your idea of meeting another intelligent race, with a comment on how intelligent would they think we are if you were the brains behind anything, but I didn't.... ---------------------------------------------------- You also realize that you take for granted everything up to this point... People used to die from colds, or flu, but research by people helped first understand then implemented ways to minimize effects and possibly cure... What if you were back in the early 1800's and were working in a factory at 7 and then died because of the terrible unsanitary work conditions? Is that a point were you would still say we still shouldn't look towards our own progress first? This is the pace of humanity, we strive to move further, faster, and for longer. FAH helps that, so I do it. Is asprin for headaches or arthritis a waste of research, or a cure for AIDS, I mean what you are saying is that to keep a good quality of life, research shouldn't go into those things... When the doctor gives you penicilan for some infection you have, think about how said you don't like research into life saving endevours. anthony Posted February 3, 2004 Posted February 3, 2004 actually i also believe that everyone is motivated by self fishness. we wouldnt be here today if we werent. probally all of us strive to be a better person. but truth fully we are ALL selffish
