Is it me, my luck or the software?

Recommended Posts

I've tried Memtest86 3.5a on two pair of ddr2 dimms (newly bought) both failed.

4gb kit:

Now I've bought a brand new motherboard, ddr3 dimms and whatnot. Tried Memtest86 4.0 b3, and got errors at test 9.

motherboard = ASUS P8P67 Pro

cpu = Core i5-2500k

Is it me, my luck or the software that fails???

What do you use for memory diagnostics?

Cheers Brutality (It's getting depressing though.)

I'd say luck. Try and RMA both sets.

I've already RMA'd the Transcends and got money back both times, but I'll try Memtest 4.0 (the other was a beta version anyways, gonna cross fingers...) for the DDR3 now..

Updated signature so specs should be as they are.

EDIT:

But Memtest86 is the best memory diagnostic? (http://memtest86.com/)

Have you tried Memtest86+? http://www.memtest.org/

:withstupid: I use that, though it shouldn't make a difference if you use either.

Have your tried running maybe prime95 in blend mode in windows and see if it fails at all?? (make sure "Round Off Checking" is enabled)

After checking the timings (fail that I didn't do that..) (they were good though) I just started a memtest with memtest86 4.0 (no beta version :P) and it did a pass so far, in 9 minutes only (DDR3 ftw? :D (at least faster than DDR2 :P)) Do I need to run it for 12 hours when it can do a pass in only 9 minutes? (It's not a problem if I need to run it for 12 hours, it's more like, if there's no need to ;))

See attachment.. sigh

Gonna try prime95 with Round off checking to be sure now.. btw how long should I run it to be sure that there really are no errors?

but what do you guys think?

I know that memtest86 says "Don't buy cheap memory and expect it to work reliably." and I do find the Kingston ValueRAM cheap (I know it's Kingston though, and that should be good) but I trust more in you guys than memtest86, or myself lol

Should I order a new pair (gonna rma or get money back for these if they fail prime95) or go for more quality (if there are... I'm new to DDR3 etc.)

Cheers Brutality

meh, seriously I can't believe I managed to get 3 faulty dimms in a row now...

maybe it was a huge bad batch. Cheap memory shouldn't be less reliable, that'd be illegal to send. It may not have the overclocking headroom but it should always be able to run at it's rated speeds and voltages.

maybe try bumpin up the ram voltage two clicks and see if it passes. Hopefully it's not your motherboard

Wait... 9 mins? My 1600mhz dimms took 45mins. I was running Memtest86+ 4.2.
