F13Bubba Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 So I'm considering trying to sell my current mobo and CPU and getting a sandy-bridge set up. I would go with the i5-2500k and this MSI board. I want the 2x PCI-E x16 slots, as I will eventually get another GTX460 to run in SLI. I'm thinking I might be able to get $225 out of my current mobo+cpu, and then the upgrade would cost roughly $150. Thoughts? F13Bubba Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 im doing the same thing i say go for it I'm just nervous about being able to sell my stuff. I have plenty of money in the bank for the upgrade, but I'd prefer not to have a cpu and motherboard hanging around like my old graphics card. IVIYTH0S Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 Sell first, then buy. $150 seems like alot though... Do you have a microcenter near your house? Is that as high as your 750 can overclock?

Is that as high as your 750 can overclock? No microcenter's in AZ. I'm sure I could get it to clock higher, but that's as far as I'm willing to go with my cooler, and without messing with the voltage. The cost of the cpu+mobo would be around $370 from Newegg, and assuming I can get $225 from my current rig, it's going to be close to $150. Hmm... since I'd be removing the mobo anyway, I might want to upgrade the case as well... I have been looking at some full towers lately... medbor Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 (edited) i´d say go with a itx mobo if they are doing the right chipsets yet... Edit: didn't realize you said 750->2500K cause then no! Not worth it, wait for socket 2011/bulldozer/nextgen. you won't really see the difference... I don't go there often since I am in Tucson, but I have been able to find a deal or two when I have gone there

I wonder if it will be worth it in the future to go with a board that runs at x16 and x8 rather than x16 and x4. I suppose I could find someone on the board willing to pick them up from their local store and then ship them to me. It would save me $40 on the processor alone. El_Capitan Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 The 2500k is pretty much exactly the same as the 2600k, it just doesn't have Hyperthreading. And since we know that you can overclock higher without Hyperthreading...
