Been doing some research

Hey everyone. I am thinking about doing a upgrade on my current rig. I am looking at getting a Corsair 850watt Modular 80 Plus PSU and a AMD Phenom II X4 970 BE and since the cpu would only support DDR2 1066 or DDR3 1333 I would get 8gb Gskill DDR2 1066. What are some thoughts on that combo? I've heard that the Deneb 970 can be oc to 3.9 reliably on air cooling I have the Hyper 212+ and I currently get 40 C at full load Prime 95 so that shouldn't be a problem. Hell right now on my system I get 50 fps on Bioshock 2 at 1920x1080 all high settings. I get 12500 on 3dmark06 now so I am wondering what it would be like with these upgrades? I also thought about getting a Sapphire 5870 1gb. Or I could get another Sapphire 4870 1gb and run crossfire which would be better? Any thoughts would be appreciated, thanks.

What? The 970 BE only supports DDR3 1333???? I ran DDR3 1600MHz with my 965. I haven't really researched the PII 970, but I have to believe that depending on the mobo it will support RAM speeds higher than 1333

No as I just stated in my post the 970 BE supports both DDR2 1066 and DDR3 1333. Really to me 1066 is fast enough considering I would have 8 gigs of it? I mean 4 gigs of ddr2 800 is fast to me and this is the fastest comp I've had played Crysis at very high 1080p and got 35 fps average on my current system. I have yet to understand the super crazy builds on this forum is 5-10 fps on three monitors worth spending hundreds more? I'm happy with 50 or 60 fps on any game and I pretty get that much now.

AMD lists those RAM speeds as the supported, but there is no reason to not get DDR3-1600 (or higher) for an AM3 board and set the speed at the rated for the sticks. Since you have an AM2 board, DDR2-800 or 1066 will work out just fine provided your board supports 1066.

I think DDR2 ram has becme a bit expensive. Perhaps consider a new mobo and 4Gb DDR3 RAM. This gigabyte 870A-UD3 is apretty solid choice.

I dont know I would bother with a 970BE. Better to get a 955BE. It will go to 3.9-4GHz as well. save the money towards graphics or new mobo/ram

I would go a 6950 or 6970 for GPU. The CF scalings in the 4000 and 5000 series was not as good as it could be so 2 might not be much better than a single 6000 series card.

I just got this motherboard less than a month ago and I dont wanna buy another for a while. I can get 8 gb of G Skill ddr2 1066 for 160$ with shipping the 970 BE for 170$ and the PSU for 160$ that would be a pretty nice upgrade. I would probably wait a couple months before I get a different vid card. Hmmmm... I was looking at this droooool http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102888 wish I had the money for it heheh.

$160 for DDR2-1066 seems really expensive. I picked up 8GB of DDR3-1600 for $95.

I'd also go for a 955BE for $140 and then just clock it up to 4GHz with your Hyper 212 Plus. Lower clock speed than the 970BE but they overclock to about the same, so for 30 bucks less it's worthwhile.

What power supply are you considering getting?

1333mhz sticks will be cheaper and with an unlocked multi board, the extra memory speed headroom is moot.

Search the forums for some used ddr2, $160 for 8GB is ridiculous. That's like double the price of ddr3

I wouldn't bother buying any ddr2 from new, it's fairly outdated. Get a 2x4gb kit of ddr3 1600, a phenom ii x4 955 or x6 1055t instead of the 970.

Also 850w is overkill even for crossfire 4870s, a corsair tx650/750 should do you fine.

What motherboard are you planning on using/buying?

Up to you if you want to go with another 4870 but you'll have to pay extra for a crossfire motherboard and also you won't have dx11. If you can get a cheap 5870 then do it, otherwise get a 6950 and unlock it to a 6970 if you can afford it.

The price difference on 1333 and 1600 for DDR3 isn't tiny now-a-days! $2 in this case with some G.Skill Ripjaws 2x2GB DDR3. But, those are DDR3 prices, and the OP has a DDR2 mobo :whistling: Seems like the older RAM is always more expensive than the newer RAM, which makes 0 sense. But look at PC3200 RAM prices still, for 4GBs it's like $100

OP- You said you have had the mobo for less than 30 days? Can you return it? If so, the price difference alone on the DDR3 RAM would be worth exchanging your mobo for a DDR3 board!
