Here’s the details on the multiplayer from Duke4.net

- 4 gameplay modes: Dukematch, Team Dukematch, Capture the Babe and Hail to the King (King of the Hill mode). Dukes on other teams will have either red or blue shirts.

- 8 player max, 4 vs 4 teams only

- In ‘Capture the Babe’ when you grab the other teams babe sometimes she’ll start to freak out as you take her back to your base, so you have to give her a gentle smack to quiet her down #Winning

- 10 maps at launch, maps include; remade Dukeburger where all Dukes are miniature running around a giant world, ‘Morning Wood’ old west town, Vegas Casinos, etc.

- Jetpack only shows up in some multiplayer maps, isn’t in single player

- Holoduke will be just like Duke 3D, but this time around the player becomes cloaked, allowing for sneak melee kills

- Steroids allow Duke to do one hit kill punches, also allows for faster run speeds, cannot use weapons, not sure if their immune to Shrinker anymore like in Duke 3D.

- When shrunk by the Shrinker, the mini-Duke can still use weapons, but they only do 10% of the normal damage

- You can plant trip bombs on players and enemies

- Confirmed weapons; pistol, shotgun, ripper chaingun, pipebomb, rpg, shrinker, railgun, freezer, devestator, tripbomb. Can only use 2 primary weapons at once along with pipebombs and tripbombs.

- As you kill other players you gain experience points, which, when acquiring enough of them, you can spend the points on customizing your Duke. Basic kills get basic points, but specialty one time achievement kills like killing someone when using the holoduke or funny kills like killing yourself with the pipebomb by accident, gives you bonus points.

Capture the babe? Customizing your Duke? Sounds like the standard MP offerings, just…Dukeified!! As long as it all works, that’s fine by me.

Who remembers having all those bad butt dial-up DukeMatches back in 1996? Just me!? Whatever… blow it out your butt!!

The king returns on May 3rd – Pre-Order the “Balls of Steel” edition… if you’ve got ‘em.

what about cod and gow?

they support more than 8 players, which keeps the multiplayer fresh. 8 player limit is like starcraft 1 so it suggests that the focus of development was the single player. I wonder if they will update the multiplayer to support more players, weapons, maps, etc?

Console gamers have lower expectations, and at least GoW offers some uniqueness to it, in and of itself, even if the MP modes are basic.

CoD has persistence in rankings and skills, but more importantly a bunch of fanboys that think the series is God's gift to gamers, so they'll play it no matter what.

Like I said, console gamers have lower expectations. PC gamers are used to 16, 32 or even 64 player matches. PC gamers want unique game modes. PC gamers want mod support. Based on the details listed above, if the number of players isn't increased and/or multiplayer mod support isn't there, I expect that the console MP scene will be a lot more lively than the PC MP scene.

edited my post (The 8 player count didn't quite sink in)

I remember playing BF2 with 64 player maps. It was insanity!!

BC2 with 32 players is the best I can do right now and just scrapes by :D
