Asus ROG Rampage 3 Formula

Hi all,

after putting a watercooling loop on my cpu, the ich/ioh temps are high (65 each at idle) and under load (prime 95/ crysis) they hit 80 before i stopped it.

Are these temps too high? after looking elsewhere on the net i cant get an answer, i know the board comes with a fan to solve this problem but the tubes and whatnot are blocking where it can go.

I have my 920 oc'd to 4ghz and I thought my temps were a bit too high (in the low 50s). I cool the cpu with with an H70 (mid 40s). I've been meaning to post on those ich/ioh temps myself. I was also wondering about removing that sticker, but it is cool looking and my temps aren't as bad as yours. The little fan that was included helped drop the northbridge about 3c (not using at present). I've been wondering if I could drop the voltages on those chips a tad without crashing.

under the sticker there is a finned aluminium heatsink.

i have undervolted both the ich and ioh to 1v and i have had no probs but i am only on a 3.5Ghz overclock.

i have fixed the problem by putting a spare case fan so it blows directly onto the heatsinks but temps are still at 50-55.

that is probably due to 35 degree room temps though.

I have bad news for you Much....Asus is freaking awesome, but on the Rampage III series mobo's, they used some crap yellow thermal paste for the entire nb/sb heatsink. I have had to deal with this issue on 3 different Rampage III boards. You will need to completely remove the entire nb/sb heatsink. Once it is off you will see the yellow crap on both the chipsets and the underneath side of the heatsink. It is a freaking pain in the butt to clean this junk all off, but it is necessary! Once you have removed all of the yellow crap, re-apply a good thermal paste to the chipsets and re-seat the nb/sb heatsink. As soon as you do this your temps will drop drastically, and you will be good to go! Sucks, but it will completely take care of your temp problem!

Wow, yeah, a pain, but at least it's a solution, thought I'd have to live with this. Has anyone had luck with an aftermarket heatsink/cooler? Thanks for the tip.

I was planning on WCing my mobo with the Koolance block when I first started having temp probs. But after I cleaned off that yellow crap, and used Shin-Etsu TIM on the chipsets, right now running over 4.5GHz, with many voltages manually set ( IOH/ICH are @ 1.35v) Temps:

NB - 46C SB - 39C So really the WC would just be to do it as my temps are more than fine right now! Once you go thru the hassle, you really don't need any aftermarket cooling

Yes thats to high for a waterloop setup

Not really its one of the problems you run into when you remove the airflow from air cooled heat sink right next door. It happens and you need to adjust your airflow

That helps as well but you still need airflow

So no arctic silver 5? cause i have a tube of that around

You want something non conductive. The chipset is much thinner than the CPU so any excess TIM will run over the sides and make contact with the connections causing a problem.
