for an 8 yr old i'd probably go a DSi as there are more age appropriate games like mario or pokemon. not to mention there are ways of getting many games for significantly cheaper for the DSi if you know what i mean

I believe the DSi is moddable as well. If they are 8 years old get them the DSi. All my younger cousins have one and they swear by it (Ages 6 - 11). Getting them to share it is another story

 

However if they are into the PS exclusives then the PSP ( LittleBigPlanet, Metal Gear Solid, Valkyria Chronicles, and etc ). Whichever you choose make sure you pick up one of those screen protectors (plastic film to overlay screen).

Aint this a bit late? You've got 5 days to order and get it shipped, unless you can pick them up in store. But yes i would say the DSI.

Knowing the ace bracket (aka not for you) the DSi would be the better choice
