DeathNote Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 (edited) Im looking to upgrade my graphics card and I finally have some extra cash. I've been looking into a 6870 for about $260 but Newegg has a 5870 on sale for $215 after MIR Im thinkin about the SAPPHIRE 100281-3SR Radeon HD 5870 (Cypress XT) 1GB or the XFX HD-687A-ZNBC Radeon HD 6870 Black Edition 1GB cards. I have 2 questions...... 1) If I put one card into my system, which card is the best option? 2) If I crossfired the cards, which card is the best option? IVIYTH0S Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 I seems like the 6870s in CF are better somehow than two 5870s but a single 5870 is better than the single 6870. If you know you'll be CF'n off the bat then get the 6870 but if not get a 5870
mattyamdfanboi Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 somehow??? it just scales better... just like my 5850 killed ur gtx460 1 on 1.. but then add another to each and the 460s mutilate the 5850s... lol scaling
joel.monteiro Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 6870 has better CF scaling,5870 performs just a little better then a 6870,but i would go for the 6870,the 5870 does not out perform the 6870 by a large margin.
MercuryDoun Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 6870 IMO. Crossfire scaling is MUCH better... If there is even a mild chance you will do Crossfire in the future, the 6870 is the better investment.
Rofltroll Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 The 6900 series is coming out really soon(this December if I remember correctly). I suggest waiting until then. Maybe the 5870 might even get cheaper.

I would wait for the 6900 series before making any decisions , it only a week or two away.
mattyamdfanboi Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 funny how that works.. coz in that duel thingy, i destroyed el capitan as well... easily.. and not far off u.. but then on other setups, i get owned... rather interesting.. DeathNote Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 (edited) I know that I wont have the cash for the 6900 series cards (expected to be over $350). With that in mind, I do want to do a upgrade now. After doing a little more research, the 5870 looks to have more power than the 6870 and with the sale on these sapphire cards, its actually cheaper....... The 5870 has 1600 streamline processors while the 6870 has 1280. The 5870 also has about 30 gb/s men bandwith advatage over the 6870. I should also say that I know that just because the numbers are higher doesn't mean overall performance is better. Im just not 100% sure with these cards With current pricing, I can do a crossfired pair of Sapphire 5870 1GB cards for about $400 and the crossfired pair of XFX 6870 1GB cards would be about $500+. With that "new" info, would u guys get the 5870 or 6870? Edited December 3, 2010 by DeathNote
