Free AntiVirus

I am currently using a 6 month trial of McAphee Security Center, and it sucks. I need something that will actually scan my computer for viruses. This just sits using up 50%CPU and doing nothing, it took 68 hours last time it did a scan and it did not finish!!!!!

I would really like a free program but if i have to i will put some money up.

Recommendations please.

Hey,

I work at a Computer Repair and do a lot of virus removals. Personally, I like AVG or Microsoft Security Essentials (both are free and don't utilize as many resources when scanning). Another good one is Avira (which is also free).

Also, if you just want to scan your computer for malware, Malwarebytes is a great program for that.

Hope this helps

I like avg too. I personally prefer to do the advanced (or whatever its called) install where you can de-select all the extra stuff, seems to really free up resources that I don't need or use.

edit: run in tandem shouldn't be necessary. Get one good one and be done with it.

Surprised nobody has mentioned Avast yet.

^ +1

My wife's computer uses Avast! and has had no problems since I've installed it.

I'd also suggest trying out Kaspersky, if you like it you can buy it, but there is a free 30 day trial (which is very useful if you have some hard-to-kill viruses.)

I used to be an avid fan of AVG, but Microsoft Security Essentials is by far the best and most efficient anti-virus software ive ever used. And its totally free(Provided of course you have a legit copy of windows, as it does a check to ensure that you windows is a valid copy) It has active protection to keep you from getting infected in the first place, and you literally dont even notice its scanning when it is scanning.

Your really not supposed to run more than one Anti-virus program at the same time... they end up conflicting with each other and neither one ends up working properly, and in the end just wasting your system resources. Just use one.

My vote goes to MSE, I wouldnt dream of using anything else. I cant stand Norton and McAfee...
