SpeedCrazy Posted October 20, 2010 Posted October 20, 2010 (edited) Hi Guys I am trying to prolong the life of my XFX 7600GT ( ) till Christmas. But i cant find out what dangerous temps and such are for it. Everywhere i find reference to it people are talking about it being at 590/570 or something like that. Mine is stock clocked at 650mhz and card memory at 800mhz, this does not match up. So what are safe temps for it? Cause it idles around 70 C and under load, is weird it works its way up to about 95 C then drops to about 70 then steadys at 95 C. El_Capitan Posted October 20, 2010 Posted October 20, 2010 I figure you're looking for cheap alternatives, and nothing like watercooling? 1. You can undervolt and underclock it. 2. If you put a case fan underneath it pushing air up to the video card, that helps temps a little bit. 3. You can take it apart and put in better TIM. I think he means he's trying to push it as hard as he can without damaging it before christmas comes around

FlawleZ Posted October 20, 2010 Posted October 20, 2010 Your temps are super high for a 7600GT. In fact those temps are super high for any graphics card. It should never idle at 70C, or see load of 95C. Most 7600GT's would top out around 70C load. First thing is pull that sucker out and make sure you fan is working. Unless your 7600GT is a silent model (no active cooling, no fan). In which case I highly recommend ditching a passive cooler for performance applications. Make sure all the dust is cleaned out of the heatsink and you may want to pull the heatsink off and reapply some thermal paste. Applying some Arctic Silver and remounting the Heatsink should make a noticeable difference. To take things further you could try adding a different heatsink altogether, either aftermarket or a larger OEM heatsink from another card. They don't look like anything out of the ordinary to me. Load temps under 100 C are perfectly acceptable.

Many GPU's begin producing artifacts after 85C. Some even as low as 80C.

Almost every GPU released since the 7-series from nVidia has a maximum operating temperature spec well above 100 C. I don't think I've seen a GPU core artifact from heat in years (memory is entirely different).

My 4870X2 sat at low 90s idle and into the low 100s at load (and things besides the GPU cores were hotter than that!) before I watercooled it. High temperatures no longer worry me as long as I don't see any artifacting and they are within spec. SpeedCrazy Posted October 20, 2010 Posted October 20, 2010 Whats with the clock differences though? Thanks for the reassurances about cooling, btw its been to 105 and never artifact-ed. (not that i try and keep it there)

(not that i try and keep it there) Well I'm not sure on the core clock (unless you overclocked it and forgot about it?) since the stock is 590 MHz if you have the XXX edition. The memory clock sounds correct at 800 MHz (1.6 GHz DDR). http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/
