GodlyManDude540 Posted September 4, 2010 Posted September 4, 2010 Is the i7 980x worth the upgrade from my 920? Or do you think I should wait for the price to go down and maybe a few other 6 cores to pop out?
xPETEZx Posted September 4, 2010 Posted September 4, 2010 The real question is, do you need more power? If so, then the 980x is probably a worthy move. If you just game/browse etc, I would be suprised if you noticed a difference outside of benching. (Then again if Highs scores is what you are after, go for it!) AddictedGamer93 Posted September 4, 2010 Posted September 4, 2010 Clock for clock the 980x isnt any faster than the 920, it's in multithreaded situations where you'll see the difference.
Lhiannon Posted September 4, 2010 Posted September 4, 2010 And the multiplier is unlocked. My partner uses the 920, and I use the 980. The only time we can tell the diff is when we use serious, number crunching routines.

bobby898 Posted September 4, 2010 Posted September 4, 2010 Well yes it would be a worth while move, there is reason why one is price £600 above the other. But the thing is are you willing to spend £800 on a cpu? its a lot of money im sure anyone would agree. If you are then yes, go for it, there is no better feeling about having the fastest cpu in the world, and lets face it you wont have to buy a new one for years to come as no software will challenge it in the near future. Hope this helps. P.S. Dont ever bother waiting for new hardware to be released because as soon as u have waited for one piece of hardware to be released there will be another on its way, you will just be fighting a losing battle. GodlyManDude540 Posted September 4, 2010 Posted September 4, 2010 My dad uses my computer for autocad and I do a little video editing but besides that its mainly gaming I was just hoping that intel would release another 6 core thats a hair cheaper sometime soon or that maybe they would release a really good ocing batch
CowKing Posted September 4, 2010 Posted September 4, 2010 Sandy Bridge looks to be on par with nehalem even w/o the HT, so it's worth the wait

xPETEZx Posted September 4, 2010 Posted September 4, 2010 Why you so keen on 6-cores? Sounds cool? Or do you actually use heavily multi-thread applications?
Lhiannon Posted September 4, 2010 Posted September 4, 2010 And even then, if clocked identically wouldnt there be no difference?? Nope. The 920 has 4 cores, the 980 has 6.
IVIYTH0S Posted September 5, 2010 Posted September 5, 2010 Nope. The 920 has 4 cores, the 980 has 6. I thought the 980x was just a higher clocked 900 with an unlocked multi, thats why I never thought it'd ever be worth it
