M in MN Posted January 23, 2004 Posted January 23, 2004 Hi, RE: power Mac 5400/200 Please don't think I'm joking; I couldn't be MORE serious. I will not be allowed to buy a newer computer until this one dies and isn't fixable. What can I do to destroy this computer from within so hubby can't fix it? This is an OLD Mac; it has the monitor, speakers and computer all in ONE unit. It looks like a large pc monitor. All the cords are detachable. There are no exterior metal parts, except the connections for the various cords. I can't load a virus or worm, that isn't do-able and I can't take a hammer to it. And, no,.... common sense discussion isn't working. He figures it is still running, so we keep it until it dies. It 'runs' or should I say limps along like a one legged turtle. I could scream, but that hasn't gotten me any where either. I do own a de-magnetizer for cassette tapes, but wouldn't that just wipe out data? I can't pour pop down it, for I'd be found out. We don't have carpet to create static electricity. But even if I could create it, what would I touch to 'fry' the thing? Serious ideas needed; I want a newer computer. Thanks for any help getting this to look like it died a 'natural' death. Mrs. M.
p8baller07 Posted January 23, 2004 Posted January 23, 2004 (edited) Open it, and get a nine volt battery and touch the trasistors on the mother board (the ones around the CPU) it will burn the CPU, or you can always just take out the CPU and touch it with the 9v battery... or wait. even better. Take off the CPU fan/heatsink, turn the the computer, and be prepared to buy a new computer or CPU Edit: the best thing is to take off the heatsink, but it will make some smoke. and after you take it off, put it back on of course -Aimen Edited January 23, 2004 by p8baller07
silentsoundguy32 Posted January 23, 2004 Posted January 23, 2004 hook it up to a 240v plug
sYstEmATiC Posted January 23, 2004 Posted January 23, 2004 ok, if you know how to take it apart, take the giant metal heatsink cube off of the big motherboard (it may have a fan on it) and turn on the system for about 30 seconds, make sure u have the windows open incase it smokes, but if it smokes u know its gone. now put the Heatsink back on and put it all back together and then say, hey Mr. M, this thing is janked or somethin like that becasue i will tell you, it isnt getting fixed after a stunt like that LOL!. Good Luck trying it.

InvaderTrax Posted January 23, 2004 Posted January 23, 2004 Just dance around on the carpet in your socks and touch the motherboard. Or. take a magnet to the hard drive

adrenalinepcs Posted January 23, 2004 Posted January 23, 2004 does anyone know if you can take the cpu out of the mobo on a mac? well if you can you could just take out the cpu and break off some pins that will do the trick. Eva_Unit_0 Posted January 23, 2004 Posted January 23, 2004 Or you could just rub some strong magnets all over the mobo and everything, particularly the bios chips. That would mess something up! I find it funny how willing we all are to help fry a mac...
M in MN Posted January 23, 2004 Posted January 23, 2004 Hi all you helpful folks. I have a few questions about these suggestions: 240 v plug:... this is the USA, where in my home would I find such a thing? I have a 9v battery:.... but what does the motherboard, heatsink, and CPU look like inside a fat old mac? We don't have carpet to generate static electricity, but I'd still have to get inside the beast. The motherboard in a Mac: if I create static electricity with my hair and a balloon and can figure out what it looks like, would that work? I can't create smoke- too risky. He works from home. TAke a magnet to the motherboard: .... would the demagnetizer work? If not, how strong or big of a magnet? I appreciate your help. After reading the clarifing replies, I'll be trying some on 1/26 when he will be gone for 3 hours and the kids aren't home. I'll let you know the results. Mrs. M. Eva_Unit_0 Posted January 23, 2004 Posted January 23, 2004 I think a magnet is the best bet. Just find the biggest, strongest magnet you can and rub it all over the freakin thing. If paperclips will stick to the demagnetizer like there's no tommorrow, then it will work great!
GTSticky Posted January 23, 2004 Posted January 23, 2004 If I were trying to fry a mac, I'd open it up while it was running and start pulling out cards, ram and the cpu. then put them back in. Repeat till it won't boot... I'd recommend staying away from solutions that require electricity. You can get hurt that way. If I was to tell you that your washer and dryer run off 220-240, you wouldn't do something stupid like try to use that higher voltage to fry that mac would you? It isnt worth burning down your house, so just use one of the simple things like magnets or pulling out and reinserting components. Alternately, you can probably remove the motherboard or cpu, and take an exacto knife to some of the leads on the bottom of it. That might leave evidence though...Oh, you can also try turning it on and off real fast about 40 times, I've fried macs accidentally by doing that g'luck
