Who Here Believes In God?

I have meet some christians that where something else, outlaws, crooked, dishonest, gambling, drinking fools etc. they think its ok cause the go to that big tax free house on sundays and ask for forgiveness (or I guess thats what they do there)

Unfortunately there are many so called Christians that fall into that category. I heard a great quote that I believe applies here.

"Sitting in Church doesn't make you a Christian any more than sitting in a garage makes you a car."

Ultimate test? Hardly. The Ten Commandments is a test of whether or not you're a good Christian, not a good person.

Did you even go through the whole thing?.... I assure you that is not what its about.

Oh wow, this thing is still going. It looks like there's a whole lot of ppl that really have nothing better to do with their time. One day when you're all about to die you'll look back at this and /facepalm for all the time you've wasted.

I believe in God. I'll acknowledge that a LOT of Christians (and a few church denominations) are divisive, judgmental, small-minded, and even sometimes outright hateful, but they go against what the core values of Christianity are: to love God and love OTHERS, and to make disciples. I was a rabid little conservative when I was still a teenager being homeschooled, trolling for debates on blogs and forums, and in hindsight it was NOT right--I mean, what better way to love someone than to insist that their life's philosophy is all wrong and they're going to hell? "Golly, why won't they listen to me?" Good thing I'm past all that now.

As far as science and philosophy are concerned, I for one would rather believe I was created by a higher power than believe I'm descended from inanimate matter that slowly evolved over millions of years. Regardless of what scientists try to say about the matter. And I think I'm all the happier for it (you can blame it on "blind faith" if you want, but that's a whole 'nother can of worms). So why should I believe there is no God if my belief makes me value myself as a person and causes me to show kindness to others?

You can tell me that I'm missing out on a life of ., drugs and rock n' roll (I'm paraphrasing a poster from the first page I guess), but I can honestly say after coming out of a pornography addiction that it feels great not having that control my life. And my friends who have overcome some of life's pleasures that I haven't experienced (alcoholism [though I enjoy a drink or four now and then :P ], hard drugs and .), have told me I'm not really missing much.

I know you'll hear from a lot of Christians that will tell you "oh, but I'm not that kind of Christian" to throw you off the scent (and I guess I'm one of them), so I want to note here that theology (study of God) does have a lot to do with the God argument and claims we can make about lifestyles and things of that nature, just like there are different theories and lifestyles that some atheists subscribe to that other atheists wouldn't agree with. I'd imagine many atheists feel like they live happy, fulfilled lives just like many Christians do, or even better. The same can go for any other religion as well. I guess what I'm trying to say is, don't look down on a whole group of people because you've seen some that act like jerks. Even if you find something in their belief system that tells them to be jerks, STILL, reserve judgment until you see how they treat others and what their life is like.

As Ted would say, be excellent to each other! (Not sure if I agree 100% with Bill though--"party on, dudes" is a rather general exhortation)

  • 2 weeks later...

I believe in God as a concept. That concept in all its religious forms has helped to bring about better life for the majority of people on this planet, past and present. I do not believe in God as an entity of some kind. God didnt create man.... man created God. Oh, the church and bible has helped give man a code to live by for the better. I dont read the bible, koran or any other written form of religion or go to any kind of church.

Welp thats about it for me. C U round the forums.
