When do you think Core i7 3.2ghz will drop in price?

Currently, I have a system that can handle Starcraft 2 just fine on everything on ultra. Its a dual core 3.16ghz stock clocked on Vista 64bit with a GTX 260 900MB 1066 DDR2 4GB RAM

 

But like with all games that I am anxious for, I tend to build a new computer, so I will be waiting till July 15th to actually build a system from newegg.... but prepare in July 1st to do all my research. This computer has lasted me close to 2 years just fine but I have been waiting a year for the core i7's to drop and I want the 3.2ghz to drop from 579$ to at least 300$, even 400$ would do. I might keep my GTX 260 because I don't think its a bottle neck.

 

So question, when do you guys think Core i7's 3.2ghz will drop in price? And second, should I be waiting for something incredible? I hope in july that usb 3.0 and 6.0GB/s motherbaords will be out and support, but is there anything else except for the Intel 6x Core i9's that will cost 1k USD which I have no interest in over doing my system.

 

I just want a system that will last me for a good 3 years or so.

 

I mean you think Windows 7 will increase my performance? I stay away from overclocking because I like to resell my computers so I can get at least 300-400$ back, or at least whatever I can.

buy a i7 920 or 930, overclock it to ~4Ghz & that should last for 2-4 years easily.

 

and USB 3.0 & SATA6 mobo's are already out... there's just not many devices for them yet

If you live near Microcenter, the 930's are $200 and 920's are $180. IMO, I do not see them much less than this but you never know. BTW the Gigabyte X58UD3R is also $200 @ Microcenter and I have seen them for $190 @ NewEgg.

Im assuming you have the same CPU as me.

 

I was on Vista but migrated to Win7. cant say I thought it was amazingly quicker ( I think Startup is) but it certainly doesn't bleat at you for everything, begging your permission to do stuff like a whiney child, so for that alone its worth it. I like my OS again. If you were into Overclocking I would say stick withthe C2D and invest in better GPU. My CPU isn't really throttling me back as I can pretty much run anything maxed.

 

If gaming is all you are planning for then littel real difference between AMD or Intel although AMD tends to be a bit cheaper to do.

Why bother? The i7-920 overclocks to 4GHz with minimal difficulty and overvolting, the D0 stepping works at 4Ghz with a vcore as low as 1.3, and it worked at 3.8GHz with a voltage that was slightly below stock (1.175 to be exact). A voltage that low isn't going to kill your proc anytime soon either. Just get a 920 along with a decent aftermarket cooler (if you're strapped for cash I'd recommend the coolermaster 212, not the best cooler there is, but pretty damn close, and for 30 bucks too) and just overclock it to 3.2GHz, you likely won't need to fiddle with voltages at all for an overclock that small, which means your proc will last that much longer in comparison.

There is NO guarantee any chip can oveclock at "X" voltage. The 930's are supposed to be "cherry" picked chips and even if they need more voltage, IMO they appear to overclock higher than the D0 920. IMO you have a better chance of getting a better overclocking chip with the 930. I have pushed mine to 4.51Ghz stable(930) for a reference with decent watecooling of course. This is an Overclock Club and most tend to be on the side of higher overclocking.
