Would Fermi be a bad choice?

Recommended Posts

Indeed. Maybe for that topic I'll make a thread in the other forum. I think I should stick to what I started in the thread, lol. I always stray off topic. :P

Should I get a GTX470 or an HD5850? There are some convincing arguments for both, but right now the 470 is looking pretty nice (despite being hotter and more power hungry).

both are great cards, I'm a money pincher so the 5850 is my choice. I'd just OC the poo outta it. 470 is cool too, though obviously more expensive, though will give slightly better performance.

It's up to you!

5850:Save Money (and power lol) get 5850 and possibly OC to or beyond 470

470:Want Physx () and better off the line performance, and possibly more with OC'n (I don't know how they clock) but costing a bit more change.

I'm thinking that the 470 would be nice in my rig. I've used ATI in all my previous computers, so maybe I'll give NVIDIA a whirl. :D

However, from what people are saying, it seems like both cards would be good choices.

The absolute most important PSU factor is amps or wattage on the +12v rail. 39 amps (468 watts) is not that great, but seeing as how the 470 only requires 38 (456 watts), you should be OK.

If you fold and/or want physx like you mentioned in the original post, go with the 470. Don't leave it up to a coin :P

Alright, 470 it is!

I think I might bump up the power supply a bit though, just as a "safety net" type of thing.

Same, this thing is amazing <3 ()

I am pretty sure you could even run SLI GTX470's with this baby. Because it can run HD2900PRO's in Crossfire(They use about 200 watts each). Not 100% sure on that though, but really it is a great power supply and I love it.

I'll right, I'll look into that one. :O

It looks good from the reviews on the site.

Although I'm also considering a 650w by Coolermaster, a 650w by XFX, and a 650w from Silverstone. All are single +12v rail with upwards of 45 amps on it. :P

Though I suppose I can't have "too much" power.

Bless you Miek....I have been SERIOUSLY pondering this exact question and have always been a green guy until the ATI 4 series started dominating and I had to get a 4870......I have a serious issue with the Windows7 59hz bug....I had a 5850 in my rig for a week and it fixed my issue.....if the 470 will fix the issue I will certainly go with it.....as the 5850 had screen tearing issues with BC2 even with vsync on....

Also in checking around it appears that I can use my Thermalright T-Rad2 on a 470....thus nullifying the heat/noise issues.

I'd say go with to much power m8 a 650w will be pulling almos peak power at most times with that setup. I'd say get the pc power and cooling 750, or the corsair TX/HX750
