mavrich Posted April 28, 2010 Posted April 28, 2010 Hey guys, I'm going to start on my first and new project with desktop computers. I haven't built a computer in years and want some thoughts, comments and suggestions on hardware. Goals: Build a dualbooting system, (Mac OSx + Windows i7) that can last for 2-5 years (future proof). Want to hit around 4.0ghz OC w/ HT. Case - Thermaltake Element V? CPU - Debating between i7 920 and i7 940 Mobo - Debating between GIGABYTE GA-X58A-UD5 And GIGABYTE GA-X58A-UD3R And GIGABYTE GA-X58A-UD7 CPU fan - Noctua NH-D14 Heatspreader compound
Hyper Posted April 28, 2010 Posted April 28, 2010 Never tried to load OSX on one of my pc's but since mac sells HD4870's and GTX285's I would think them two would be supported. http://store.apple.com/us_smb_78313/produc...mco=MTA4MzU2NTc http://store.apple.com/us_smb_78313/produc...mco=MTA4MzU2MDA Never heard of SLI or Xfire working on a mac though.. someone else might have a better insight though checked in the Q&A and found this Best Answer No you can not. There are only two 6-Pin PCIe power plugs. However there are sites out there that can help you rewire to get two more 6-Pin PCIe to power the 2nd GTX 295. There are only 4 slots. 3 single and 1 double wide. That will allow only two GTX 285 and one GT 120 to be installed. Also there is no SLI on Mac OS X. So getting two GTX 285 and SLI will not work nor give you extra performance.
TheHippi Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 (edited) Do you need to dual boot it, or can you just run OS X through VM Ware? It's a lot simpler than dual booting it. Edited April 29, 2010 by TheHippi
mavrich Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 Thats what I had read as well. Do you think the ATI or the NVIDIA card is faster? Also, do you know if OSx supports raid?

Parallels I heard is better than VM ware. Do you know if OSx supports raid?
hierovision Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 It better support RAID... since it's based on Unix. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2559 As far as virtualization you're better off running OSX server through VMware WS. It violates their EULA but . Apple, do it anyway. Here's a result I got from a google search: http://www.redmondpie.com/how-to-install-o...dows-7-9140301/ Nice step-by-step from 2010.
