redtigerdragon Posted April 28, 2010 Posted April 28, 2010 2TB drive, 5400rpm, 64mb cache OR 2TB drive, 7200rpm, 32mb cache??????? Which one would be better, or are they better for different tasks? I'm not sure, so I'm hoping the great minds of OCC can help (that means you can't contribute, leet ).
redtigerdragon Posted April 28, 2010 Posted April 28, 2010 2TB and 7200 rpm is better So RPM is better than cache? Any reason or further reading I can do. My friend asked me, and I wasn't sure, but want to know why...
ebarone Posted April 28, 2010 Posted April 28, 2010 RPM is way more important than cache when talking about 5400 vs 7200. Remember, its a mechanical drive... you have to wait for the platter to physically spin to the proper position until you can get the data you want, so access times for randomly located data will always be quicker on a higher RPM drive. Cache, as far as I know, is the storage space for things the hard drive figures will be used frequently, or is about to be requested. Its better to have more of it, but never at the cost of 1800 RPM. Hope that helped =)
sdy284 Posted April 28, 2010 Posted April 28, 2010 better for different tasks, what are you going to be using the drive for? If you're going to partition the drive to include your OS, then i would go for the 7200 RPM drive. If you're going to have your OS on a seperate drive and just use this for serving videos/music then i'd go with the 64mb cache
wevsspot Posted April 28, 2010 Posted April 28, 2010 I wouldn't use a 5400RPM drive regardless of cache size for anything but storage. If this drive is for your OS or applications 7200RPM all the way. You'll be sorry if you don't.
redtigerdragon Posted April 28, 2010 Posted April 28, 2010 (edited) The drive would just be for storage and for storing some games on it as well, he is using an SSD as his main drive. sdy284 Posted April 28, 2010 Posted April 28, 2010 if he's going to be installing games on it, then you may want to go with the 7200 RPM. if he's just storing the iso's or w/e then the 5400rpm will be fine
