Crawlerz246 Posted April 28, 2010 Posted April 28, 2010 I have used catalist control center (not riva tuner) to OC my 4890 to 930/1100 and left the fan control on auto. in GTA4 it gives me up to 60FPS on "very good" setting on 1920x1080. it heats up like a female dog tho, sometimes reaching 70, so I turned the fan to manual and 40% RPM (the temp dropped but the noise is too much to take). now it got me wondering... since w/o OC it does up to 55FPS and stays a lot quiter and cooler, is OC really worth it? plz chime in with suggestions...TY
krazypoloc Posted April 28, 2010 Posted April 28, 2010 70c isn't bad at all for that card. If its playable at 55fps for you and thats all you play then leave it at stock.
IVIYTH0S Posted April 28, 2010 Posted April 28, 2010 OC is worth it, heck 90C 24/7 would be A-ok, can you push higher??
cjloki Posted April 28, 2010 Posted April 28, 2010 OC is worth it, heck 90C 24/7 would be A-ok, can you push higher?? what ivy said plus; if the fan was set to say 60-65% the temps would go way down and there would only be a minimal noise increase...hardly noticeable... MandoPatriot Posted April 28, 2010 Posted April 28, 2010 90C is ok?? Dang, here I thought 50C was bad.. I am rarely over 40C on my 260!

I wouldn't say that the fan noise increase is "hardly noticeable" - it is LOUD! and you say, OCers, that 90 degress is OK? really? seems like it wouldn't be. but what do I know. I remember reading somewhere that the 4800's aren't at all damaged until they maintain or exceed 120C....but I'd never like it to far passed 100C. But 90C is plenty fine, thats what I run about with my card when folding which I do all day every day during the colder days

I tried going 940 but craped out for some reason. similar to my CPU OC: 4.2 is fine, 4.25+ starts BSODing. and I won't increase VCORE much until I either buy a H2O or ... IDK yet... I'm seeing the new nVidia Fermi in my sleep but so far 500$ is just not cost effective.
IVIYTH0S Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 A 5850 would be a nice upgrade and run cooler and be more efficient too but yeah I run auto fan and I don't bat an eyelash at my 85C loads
Crawlerz246 Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 I tried going higher than 930/1100 but I got game crashes. and altho I went back to 930/1100 GTA4 still crashes. oh btw I set my PCIe speed in BIOS to 105 (as opposed to 100) a long time ago... Try dropping PCI bus back down to 100 and see if you still get the crashes. (some cards are ok with it others not so much..)
