xPETEZx Posted April 27, 2010 Posted April 27, 2010 Hi guys, Not sure how many of you will be familiar with Euro hot hatches, but what the heck. I am looking to get rid of my 2001 Ford Mondeo 2.0 LX later this year, for something abit more fun! On my short list are the following: Honda Civic Type-R. Looking at a 2-3 year old one, with no more than 30k miles, and it looks like this can be had for
IVIYTH0S Posted April 27, 2010 Posted April 27, 2010 I'm not a honda fan by any means but the Type-Rs you europeans get are sick, that being said do you want the car that's fastest or best on gas while still being thrifty?? kingdingeling Posted April 27, 2010 Posted April 27, 2010 That's the model Civic you want as a Type R! The newer ones are worse, they have worse suspension etc. You should check out the Top Gear test of this one versus the newer one, this one wins easily! I saw the top gear ep, and from reading around, this one may be slightly better, but the fact is I am never gonna be a good enough driver to tell the difference. I do want fuel ecomony if I can, but really I want fun!! Been reading more, and the Mazda 3 MPS AWD has jumped into the lead!! Can get one with 13k miles, 2.5 yrs for

kingdingeling Posted April 27, 2010 Posted April 27, 2010 As Jack (Silverfox) already pointed out (which I have blatantly forgot about), a hot-hatch of sorts with awesome fuel economy is the BMW 1-Series with a Diesel, I have one myself (118d 143HP). You can get these used (5-door) for ~10 grand, I just poked around the BMW UK website for a bit (which will be more expensive than if you do a search on whatever the UK car website is) and found this 120d (163HP) for 11.795 quid with Leather, 6x CD changer, park distance control, electric seats and what not. As I said, I have a 118d (2007 model) with the 143HP engine which takes about 6.8L/100km, which is ~42MPG, but you should get much better than that. I drive a lot on the Autobahn and then it's pedal-to-the-metal, so in the UK you should be getting more like 50MPG.

Silverfox Posted April 27, 2010 Posted April 27, 2010 Also, OP doesn't state his age. Fully comp insurance will cost an arm and a leg if you have any penalty points or lacking any no claims bonus. I have 3 points, no claims (but claimed from someone else who admitted fault), and 6 years protected no claims bonus, aged 24. xPETEZx Posted April 27, 2010 Posted April 27, 2010 Thanks for all the replies! Currently get 35 MPG in my Mondeo. So if I can stay above 30, I am happy tbh. Will be doing a lot less comute driving come july. So it will be mainly for fun/social. So mpg gets much less important than it is now. The 1-seiers was on my radar, but they cost too much. The one you linked to King, has 65k miles on it, and is an 05. I want a newer/less miles car tbh. Not saying im a . driver, but I just dont think that the differences would be large enough for me to notice. If I remeber rightly on the top gear track, there was less than a minute in the time. I will DEFINATELY be test driving all of them, just wanted some opinions from people who perhaps owned them/had driven them for a while. Cheers for the responses so far! Silverfox Posted April 27, 2010 Posted April 27, 2010 Over 30 mpg in any of these cars as a commute (petrol based) will be a BIG challenge. As soon as you put your foot down, kiss goodbye to economy ...
kingdingeling Posted April 27, 2010 Posted April 27, 2010 Test drive a 118d, possibly a facelift model (>03/2007) as well, you won't be disappointed
