Vaelen2001 Posted January 17, 2004 Posted January 17, 2004 What CAT cable would i need to connect two gigabit LAN cards together, without a switch/hub/router? Cat6? Cat6e? Cat7? ---Vaelen2001
bishop245 Posted January 18, 2004 Posted January 18, 2004 i believe it would be cat6
Special_K Posted January 18, 2004 Posted January 18, 2004 ya, cat6, let me add something onto that, What supports gigabit transfers right now?
Dignan Posted January 18, 2004 Posted January 18, 2004 Cat 5e does too... The only difference between cat 5e and cat6 I believe is that cat6 has sheilding around each wire and 5e only has shielding around the entire group. Cat6 is used to run longer distances without quality degradation. So a cat5e crossover cable would be you best bet as long as the distance in short. Cat 5e supports 10/100/1000 transfer rates

Vaelen2001 Posted January 18, 2004 Posted January 18, 2004 ya, cat6, let me add something onto that, What supports gigabit transfers right now? i plan to have two gigabit cards in each of my computers (my rig and my mini server) and i'd prefer to have gigabit transfer rate instead of megabit. Guest Ballz2TheWallz Posted January 18, 2004 Posted January 18, 2004 yeah 1 gigabit card wont do a whole gigabit but two should
exeter_acres Posted January 18, 2004 Posted January 18, 2004 i mean like as far as isps and stuff AFAIK it would be used for an internal network..... it would not affect your ISP/Internet speeds that are limited by the caps placed by the ISP
sykocus Posted January 18, 2004 Posted January 18, 2004 i mean like as far as isps and stuff even if you had a dual t1 line you wouldn't use a whole 10/100 connection. so i wouldn't expect 1 gigabit internet connections anytime for a couple decades. its just for lans.
