Voltage increase on the i7 920.

I'm ready to overclock my i7 920. I have a couple of questions before I begin, hopefully somebody can help me out!

 

1)I'm going to OC from 2.66 --> 3.0/3.2 Ghz (I'm leaning on a simple 3.0Ghz) . My Vcore is currently set at 1.264 volts. If I'm overclocking to 3.0/3.2, how much additional voltage am I going to need to feed to the CPU? I can offset the voltage by +20 mV , + 40mV and so on.

 

2)I'm running an air cooling system. Do you think it is sufficient for a 3.2 Ghz overclock? Am I thermally limited at 3.2Ghz?

 

I'm at odds with Dell in determining my what kind of air cooling system I have, so I attached some pictures of it!

downloadReal Temp then download Prime95 and skip to step 3 do download your appropriate version.

 

run both programs for about 10 mins and post a screenshot of the result, that will give us a good understanding of that hunk of metal you have actually cools your CPU

I just ran prime95 for 10 minutes, my idle temperatures were in the low 30's, however during the test...not so good!

I have a 920 and you dont need to touch the voltage for that overclock, only the Base Clock, roughly 150 or so for 3.0 ish. As for your cooler, it probably isnt sufficient from what I can see, go after a poven aftermarket cooler, such as Noctua

honestly, thats better than the stock intel solution & should easily be able to handle a few hundred MHz OC. I would read a few of the i7 OC threads here (there are tons) and slowly OC until your temps get around 75

Those temps arent bad, I run some around 70c folding 24/7 since the i7 920 hit the shelves...

So I don't need to offset the voltage at all? I can straight up change the BCLK to 150 without any tinkering of frequencies and voltages? I added a couple of pictures of my BIOS for you guys to have a look at .

 

I will definetly be checking out alot of other threads on the i7 920. I might just need to buy a cooler, hopefully it doesn't come to that but I'll post something here if I'm searching for one.

Yo bro this is what i think.

 

I have a i7 920 as well with the x58m msi motherboard. with the ada 1600 3gbs gaming memory with a standard fan.

i hav just recently clocked my cpu. firstly i did not know of overclocking. but through reading at overcloclers club.

i found that the highst you can go is 3.4 with a mutipler of 22.

 

my this is this i set my memory to 9.9.9.24 as what the memory says. on the board there is a swicth that i chaged to 133, 166 and 200.

so i set the board to 200. then i rebooted and got 3.6 (200*18) qpi at 4.800 the all i did what to change qpi to 6.400 and the i7 920 2.6ghz

is runing at 4.00ghz (200*20) and this is still with a standard fan.

 

so yes if you think that 3.0ghz is enough think again.

if you that i am lying i will take snap shots from my bios tonight and post it

Well i am not to cluded up about the tempertures but the last i saw was that the cpu temp was at 32 degre.

and i have just recently mod the case. I have just 3 system fans the both run at speeds of 1300 to 1400 rpms.

 

the one in from blows in. the one on top blows in i think not sure though. the one the side blows out.

I think that is why i get this tempretures.

 

what i wnat to do it put another system fan in the top so that one extracts the excess hot air.

on the other side i want to put the small fan to extract the excess there as well may two.

still deciding.

 

Then i would like to get the top of the ranger cooler fan tunqig tower extreme. but not to sure if it is in South Africa yet.

So i am thinking that if the air flow it tight then i should be able to get lower tempretures.

I will have take pictures for tempretures now and post them on monday for you.

when i get a cooler. if it is not the tuniq then i will have to get the zalman cooler

do you mean a 930? max multiplyer on a 920 is 21..
