lost Posted April 8, 2010 Posted April 8, 2010 (excuse the terrible drawing, did it while i was bored at work on a laptop without a mouse on mspaint) this is my room as it stands. (arrows pointing north) bed on the east side. the cable wire (thick black wire) comes in from there, goes around and to my computer, where it is connected to the cable modem which is connected to the router. that's how it was when i first got it, but over the years devices started to add up. d-link dir655 router is connected to 4 things via wire. Current Setup: Cable Modem (blue) Connected to DLink DIR 655 (gray). 4 wired devices connected to DLink: 2 wired computers, Vonage VOIP, Tmobile @Home 4 wireless devices: 2 laptops, 1 desktop, 1 ps3 those 4 devices total makes my room a lot warmer then id like it to be. i was thinking about building a box to those some of the things in, and place it by my north window so all the heat will be directed out the window, keeping the room cooler. i think the only device i want to keep outside would be the DIR655 which i'll connect to my computer and keep it available for the wireless connections. I tried to connect my modem directly to the tmobile@home router, and then connect the d-link 655 router to it, but nothing worked that way. i'll try again over the week to make the weekend i guess. but i think i'm going to need something, i don't know what, but its colored green, that i can connect to my modem, and then connect the 2 voip devices and the dlink 655 router to it. THE BOX that's going to contain my devices. i was thinking about a acrylic backboard where i'll fasten the devices to, i'll probably have to think of a good way to do this, cover it with some kind of netting to keep the bugs from wondering it. enclose it in a wooden box. and put it between the window and base

Nemo Posted April 8, 2010 Posted April 8, 2010 The unknown green device could be a switch would would allow you to connect multiple devices to your router.
xPETEZx Posted April 9, 2010 Posted April 9, 2010 The unknown green device could be a switch would would allow you to connect multiple devices to your router. No that wont work. The cable modem MUST be connected to a router. Your making this much more complicated than it needs to be. Just put the router in your box too. If your worried about WiFi reception, it will be fine. Unless you use some kind of metal chicken wire over it. tbh tho, I seriously dought that your router/modem/VoIP is heating up your room that much. They are only small devices that draw like 10W's tops. Your PC is probably more of a culpirt. I also dont see how the heat is going to escape out of your box out the window? Also what about rain? It looks more like you are going to create a hot box.

I can't really see how you could notice the heat effect from of a few bits of network gear
