Windows Xp installation doesn't work

Okay i'll try to explain in my best english.

My operation system is windows 7 professionel 64 bit.

I decided to dual boot with windows xp for several reasons, so i found 3 of my xp diskes and made a partion for XP.

The installation went fine, but at the boot of the harddrive after the installation i receive the following error message. "A disk read error press CTRL + ALT + DELETE to restart"

Well the same error shows up after restart.

This look's like a disk error but it is not a disk error, let me explain why.

first reason: I scanned my disk several times with tons of tools.

Secound reason: When i put in my windows 7 installation disk and use the "repair startup" function. Then my computer boots up windows 7 again like nothing ever happend.

Then i tried using the last two xp cd's and they gave me exactly the same error.

Well after trying like 6 cds i found out that this error happens at all xp cd's.

My guess is that this is a conflict between the xp sata driver and my Motherboard.

I would really love some help fellas :D

My specs:

Intel core I7 920 2.66 ghz

Ati radeon 4890 "XFX"

Gigabyte GA-EX58 UD4p

6gb kingston RAM

640gb Samsung harddrive.

Thanks :D

Yea i heard people talking about that too.

But in this case it's not the problem.

The problem is that when you install xp last it erases the Bootmanager from win 7, and you will not be able to choose win7 anymore.

This can be fixed using some software.

But i guess thats what you heard about.

  • 3 weeks later...

Windows 7 knows about XP because it's older, but XP doesn't know about Vista or Windows 7. You need to install XP first and THEN install Windows 7. There's no way around that fact that I know of. Not a simple way anyway...

One of the problems is that when you install XP, it will automatically name the main partition it's being installed on the C Drive unless it's told otherwise, or there's something else with that designation. Once that's installed, you reboot the PC with the Windows 7 disk and it'll SEE the XP install and acknowledge it, but for it to function the best, it'll name itself the C Drive and then call the XP partition the D Drive. It doesn't physically wreck the XP install or boot, but instead gives it a different designation so it can go about it's business. This is due to the fact (i assume) that many programs automatically seek out C Drive when they install, and if you have one OS on C Drive and then another that thinks it's the C drive, you'll have problems.

When you're done installing Windows 7, and you boot to XP again, XP will see itself as the C Drive and then the 7 partition will assume the D Drive designation.

Save any files you have and redo the operating systems with XP first and then Win 7. I know it works because mine worked that way. It's the same for if you dual boot with XP and Vista or Vista and Win 7. The older OS goes first. Age before Beauty

I actually had this same problem, but it was because I put the XP partition at the end of the disk. I moved the partition to the beginning of the disk and suddenly it all started working fine. Not sure why, but never bothered to look into it.
