before install win7

so the plan is to remove all the drives and leave just the SSD and install win7 like that. shut up and plug in the HD's.

 

so i should turn of indexing on my C:\, change default directory for for Users and Program folder off the C and into one of the HD's. back in XP days, this would cause problems with some programs, has that been the case with anyone?

 

any other tips before i install?

moving the users directory off of the c drive isn't as simple as the "move folder" days of XP

some programs use to cry if they weren't installed in the C drive. is that still a problem?

i still see it occasionally. but very rarely thesedays. big, well known publishers usually dont have these problems

The My Documents folder along with Music, My Pictures, My Videos, everything in your profile folder with an icon not the standard folder icon in 7 can be moved by the OS for you (same thing in Vista too). If you look at the properties of the folder, say My Documents, and go to the Location tab it will say something like C:\Users\lost\My Documents. Just change the drive letter and click move. That folder will then be moved for you and all of the references appropriately changed within the OS. I have done this on both Vista and 7 without any problems.

Steam is a little more annoying. I don't remember all of the steps I did to move that to a different partition, but It involved backing up the data files (games, saved games, user profile) to one place, uninstalling Steam, reinstalling Steam where you want it, then moving those backed files to the new Steam location. Again, once that was done there were no problems with it.

I don't know about WOW, or Trillian as I don't have either.

Also, I do not know how you can move the AppData folder, where the Firefox settings are kept. For that you may need the methods mentioned earlier.

There are some programs that do not give you a choice of where to install. Last I checked, Google programs were like this. They were actually installing to the application data folder. They may not mind being moved, I never tried.

No. I just installed Win 7 on D drive with all my old programs.
