mallz Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 Its been about 5 years since I've upgraded and find myself needing to re-learn everything all over again. The computer I'm looking to buy is the Phenom 965 BE http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16819103727 and MSI 790FX-GD70 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813130223. then 8g G.skill 1600 DDR3. My question: With crossfirex would it be worth it to buy 2 cards or one? I can afford going to <$300 for a card. Should I be looking at the hd 5850, or crossfire two hd 4870 or 5770 cards? This motherboard allows two at 16X. Also, I'm afraid I forget everything I'm lookin for in graphics cards. I like oc'ing but havn't in a while. So I've been putting this comp together using reviews and benchmark sites. can anyone direct me to very detailed explanations of video cards? also, is this a good motherboard for the AMD 965? is there recommended graphic cards? thanks! -mallz
Coors Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 What resolution are you going to run? Regardless though i'd get the best single card your budget allows.

So what use is crossfire when getting the 'bigger' card is better than two 'smaller' ones? I'm using a 23 in. widescreen, Used whatever res looked good but not sure what it is right now (I'm at work).
00stevo Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 Crossfire is useful if say,you built a comp and only had a little bit left for the gfx card, maybe enough for a 5770 but not enough for a 5850.Anyway somewhere down the line, you could add another 5770 and get equal or in some cases faster performance than a single 5870.Of course,if you have the money just do what Raiderfan001 said as it will leave you with less headaches. And i reckon your monitor is either 1680x1050,1920x1200 or 1920x1080. IVIYTH0S Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 Honestly it's a toss up, the performance should be relatively the same with and edge given to the 5770s most of the time but occasionally the 5850 may pull ahead when crossfire isn't well supported
joel.monteiro Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 buy a 5850 and down the road if u have more money buy another one.
Union Of V Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 ^^^ This. 2 5770s may equal one 5850 now, but in the future you'll be able to pick up another 5850 for much less than a 59xx for about the same performance. Then you'll be thanking us
mallz Posted February 21, 2010 Posted February 21, 2010 Thanks for all the help everyone, I ended up going with the 5850 and will upgrade down the road if need be.
