400mhz FSB for E8400 and Q9300

Hey all,

I'm still pretty new to the OC scene so please forgive me if this is a stupid question. :)

Is it normal for the E8400 and Q9300 to require 1.275V to reach 400mhz on the FSB? I've read from so many sources online with OC'ers and reviews that both require no core voltage bump to reach 400mhz FSB. Yet on my motherboard (Gigabyte Ep35-DS3R Rev 2.1), both require an increase from the stock 1.225V to 1.275V (in BIOS) to be Prime95 stable.

In both cases, I've kept the DDR2 memory constant at 800mhz, did not overclock the video card, or adjust any other voltage settings.

What causes a need for higher core voltage when comparing systems with the same hardware? The motherboard not being up to par? The cpu itself? Just wondering if this is normal, or if something is wrong with my hardware.

Thanks!
