NCC10281982B Posted January 24, 2010 Posted January 24, 2010 Due to recent problems with my windows 7 install and the fact that I can't find the w7 beta iso (can't reinstall) I am going to install ubuntu on my main rig and use it as my primary OS. At least until I can go buy a w7 dvd. Are there any recommendations pertaining running games? I know of wine but need to be pointed toward any guides out there. What about virtualization? The upside is I will finally be able to run F@H smp. Edit: I will dual boot later. Thanks!
Psywar Posted January 24, 2010 Posted January 24, 2010 I run Ubuntu using Sun xVM VirtualBox. Its a really nice OS - as for playing games on it, I still use windows for gaming. Wine was automatically installed when I installed my ver. of Ubuntu. You could always install Ubuntu as your main OS, and use the VM Virtual Box for Windows (Whatever vers. you currently have) and use the VM to run your Windows Games. NCC10281982B Posted January 24, 2010 Posted January 24, 2010 Yeah, I prefer avoid the cost of vmware workstation if I can. I'm liking ver 9.10 so far.
Union Of V Posted January 24, 2010 Posted January 24, 2010 You really need Windows for gaming, Even with virtualization you need a working copy of Windows, so I don't quite see the point.

Yeah, but no point having steam if no source games will work with the latest OpenSUSE <_< It's problems like this that pushed me away from Linux. Still use it a lot, but for gaming I'll take Windows any day. Edited January 25, 2010 by Union Of V

CAINuKe Posted January 27, 2010 Posted January 27, 2010 Yeah, I prefer avoid the cost of vmware workstation if I can. I'm liking ver 9.10 so far. Sun micro systems makes a virtualization software. It is free and is somewhat similar to VMware. IIRC its called VirtualBox. I am not 100% on weather or not they made a version for Ubuntu but I know they did for OpenSolaris. NCC10281982B Posted January 27, 2010 Posted January 27, 2010 lol there's a reason people dual boot You read the part about me wanting to dual boot later right? The "getting around to buying windows 7" part of the equation is going to delay things. I don't want to go back to vista or XP. Besides, I won't have a real reason to game until we see EP3 and/or Crysis 2.
CheeseMan42 Posted January 27, 2010 Posted January 27, 2010 I'm going to try that later for some of the less demanding games that I have. Maybe it will work out for me.
