New gaming machine build

Hi all!

Long time reader, first time poster - so be gentle!

My brother has asked me to build him a new computer to be used primarily for gaming. Now it isn't the be-all and end-all of computers, but i've put together a components list (below) that i think should cut the mustard for him. Gaming is a hobby for his spare time, not for a career. So the best of the best isn't really needed.

What i want is a straight up "out of the box" computer that will run all current games at a decent and reliable framerate, and also do the normal workstation stuff like media, internet browsing, office productivity etc etc. There won't be any OC-ing to start off with, but the parts i have chosen will definately allow for some tweaking in the future.

Here goes:

- Thermaltake V9 Black Edition Chassis AU$109

- Antec TruePower 750 PSU AU$169

- ASUS P6T Motherboard AU$277

- Intel Core i7 920 CPU AU$359

- Kingston DDR3-1600 6GB Kit (3x2GB) RAM AU$175

- WD 1TB 3.5" SATA HDD* AU$105 *Single 1TB drive, might go for another HDD and RAID later on if needed. He has another multimedia PC with all of the space hungry rubbish on it already.

- ASUS ATI 4870x2 Graphics Card AU$495

- LG DVD Super-Multi Drive AU$FREE! - although I will be fitting two similar units with LightScribe functionality as well (also free!)

We'll also be getting a Microsoft Sidewinder mouse and basic Logitech gaming keyboard. My brother uses headphones too - so we'll just run with the ASUS mobo audio. There are also some miscellaneous items like case fans and stuff that i have left off (i have plenty in at home to use). He has a 23.4" (1920x1080) monitor too. He lives in a very hot and humid climate (30C-45C, 65-95% humidity) too if that help with your suggestions.

Anyway - let me know your thoughts on the above setup. If i've missed anything or if you think i should look at alternatives for any of the parts, just post away!

:D

Cheers,

Coxy

EDIT: Added prices to items.

looks like nice parts, where do you think you'll be getting them all (oh and WELCOME TO OCC Lurker ;))

I'll be getting the stuff from a place called MSY down in Melbourne (i'm in Australia BTW). I might edit the OP and put some prices in with the parts to give people an idea of the $$$ i'm playing with.....

I'll probably be running Windows 7 64bit provided i can get my hands on a copy in the next few weeks.

Some other RAM Gskill or Corsair??

4870x2 isn't recommended unless you get it really cheap.. You could probably get a 5850 or 5870 at that price..

WD Black HDD??

The only other brand of RAM that this shop sells is Patriot, and their "gaming spec" memory is AU$185 (3x2GB). The other option for me would be to buy it online i suppose.

The price of the other two video card you suggested are: 5850 = AU$377 , 5870 = AU$658. I'll do some reading up today about those two!

The hard drive is just your standard issue unit - pretty sure that link i posted in the OP is the correct one.

I'm a little bit restricted as far as where i can buy parts from too. We have a local computer shop, but they are expensive and not exactly helpful. I buy a lot of stuff for myself via eBay, or i'll do a road trip (200km round trip) down to MSY because they're so cheap.

Cheers!

Thanks for those suggestions skugpezz - thats not a bad looking case! I've emailed it to my brother, so i suppose it depends if he like the look of it. I'm not sure if he's after a plain looking case or something flash.

Cheers!

Haf 922 owns on the inside. Nice cooling and air flow with great cable management. As you can see in the pic below I have a haf 922 and I am terrible at cable management.

You should hire me to do it, I rigged my old system w/ the 922 so you couldn't any cable at all. :P

Looks like a great system, though I would change the case (it is rather small), and use the additional room to get yourself an HD5850 or HD5870. These graphics cards are more energy efficient than an HD4870X2, and won't have the problems of a card with two cores (rare driver issues, more common scaling issues). Also, you'll have DirectX 11.

Other than those personal qualms, it's a great gaming system that's going to let you crank up the settings. ;)

*Edit* I absolutely forgot to mention that you could get another power supply since you won't need those many watts. Just keep in mind to get a quality unit (600w-650w would be the ideal balance between power usage and cost).

I'll gladly argue the 4870x2's a stronger card but the fact that the 5850 is cheaper where you are (it's more expensive then the x2 here), definitely get the 5850.

To the other's I have no scaling issues, unless I'm having them but one 4870 1GB is enough to smoothly play every game I've come across
