d3athsd00r Posted January 2, 2010 Posted January 2, 2010 I have a Q9550 currently OCed to 3.43 (recently down from 3.6) I have my voltage at the highest safe for the chip and I don't know what else I would need to mess with to be able to get it higher. I've seen people with this CPU up higher than that, but being the OC newb I am, I can't get it any higher.
IVIYTH0S Posted January 2, 2010 Posted January 2, 2010 what voltage are you running?? is that a C1 or E0 Q9550??
Bizzlenitch Posted January 2, 2010 Posted January 2, 2010 (edited) Have you tweaked your Northbridge voltage any? A little more juice there might help. As IVIY previously inquired though, what stepping is your chip? That will to some extent indicate what kind of overclock numbers you might expect. Can't remember the exact settings I'm using but I tweaked my NB voltage a bit, as well as a few other voltages in bios. I am by no means pushing this chip (reading 1.26 idle in CPU-Z, 1.2 under full IBT load) and found hitting 3.9 GHz was fairly easy if you tweak the right voltages. I cannot remember the exact site, but do a Google search for "overclocking Q9550" and I think it was Xtreme Systems or something that had a fairly extensive thread on overclocking the Q9550, including voltages other users have used to achieve high overclocks. That being said, overclocking is not a "plug in the right number" endeavor, so I would not suggest just taking other peoples' numbers and using them for your system. However, it is indeed helpful to see what others are doing to give you an idea of what voltages may increase your ability to overclock your chip. If you haven't already I'd also recommend reading the overclocking guide here on OCC. Hope this was... somewhat helpful. Boinker Posted January 2, 2010 Posted January 2, 2010 Check out the overclocking guide for overclock C2D and C2Q's. its a pretty comprehensive guide. Its in overclocking and cooling pinned to the top.
d3athsd00r Posted January 2, 2010 Posted January 2, 2010 thanks. I have the E0 stepping and I'm not certain of the voltage at this moment because I am not around my computer. When I get to it i will let you know. and no i haven't messed with the north-bridge at all.
MJCRO Posted January 2, 2010 Posted January 2, 2010 Yeah you def. have to play with NB & SB voltages to get a nice OC, I'm pushing 4.2 @ about 1.36V Load OCCT, and 1.39V at Idle on top of a CM V8.
Bizzlenitch Posted January 3, 2010 Posted January 3, 2010 Yeah, bump the northbridge voltage up a couple of notches and try again. You'll surely need some extra juice to the NB to overclock that quad any further. 3.8 GHz should be pretty easy. If you've got a good chip 4.0 GHz will probably be fairly simple to achieve as well. Good luck and keep us posted.

With an E0 4ghz should be rather easy to accomplish, check out a few guides and piece together what voltage you need to up when you get to the wall. I use Prime95 for my stressing but OCCT and IntelBurnTest are good too.
pezcore Posted January 3, 2010 Posted January 3, 2010 I've got a 9550 E0 and had it at 4GHz for a while, but am now at 3.5GHz because I didn't like the temps I was getting. There are some good threads at XtremeSystems dedicated to the 9550 (and 9650's) where you can just plug in other people's numbers and see what you get. Skugpezz Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 I dont want to sound like a hater, but you aint gonna get far on a V8 cooler
d3athsd00r Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 my current temps aren't too bad at 100% (folding) at 3360mhz . but for some reason they are a little far from each other, 38,44,53,40 on cores 0-3 respectively. not sure why core 2 is so much higher that the other two... probably need to lap the v8. Bizzlenitch Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 Instead of folding to get an idea of load temps I'd use Prime95, OCCT or even Intel Burn Test.
