My first rig

Recommended Posts

Hello OCC,

This is my first post here even though I've been reading and relying on the reviews here at OCC for the entire process so far. As the title suggests this is my first computer build from scratch, so I'd feel a lot better if a few people could look over my idea and let me know if it's good or if there's some incompatibility/conflict/etc that I didn't notice all the way down to if I have the right power connectors coming from the PSU. Any advice would be welcome on top of that! Here's my proposal:

Intel i7-920 Bloomfield http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16819115202

Asus P6T Deluxe v2 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813131365

Kingston HyperX DDR3-1800 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820104125

ATI XFX Radeon HD5870 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814150456

WD Caviar Black 640GB HDD http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16822136319

LG 22x DVD Burner http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16827136168

Corsair 850W CMPSU-850TX http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16817139009

Thermaltake Element G Case http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16811133086

(cpu heatsink undecided)

I will go CrossfireX once it starts raining money, or at least plan to. I need advice on the cpu heatsink, because I can't seem to find one that's rated consistently well. Anyhow, advice on anything is helpful. Pointing out issues is begged for! And heatsink advice is appreciated.

Well, I would sugest a good set of DDR3 1600 and save about $50, anything faster shows very little to no actual gain in normal usage. The only time 200mhs is going to make a difference in ram is a benchmark and even then the difference is slim.

The case is largely personal preference, I have heard good things about Thermaltake cases.

Everything looks good to me, you could go with a cheaper motherboard but that one is a very nice one. If money is an issue not many people actually need something that high end.

Can you give us a price range for the CPU cooler?

Thanks for the reply. I intended to OC the RAM at some point in the future, so I'll try to get 6GB 1600MHz from the same line of RAM if I do so. The motherboard I primarily picked because I need one to defeat Intel's "overspeed protection" on the 920. I heard some mb's BIOS can override the chip's own settings. The CPU cooler I'd prefer to stay under $100, but if it's really worth it, I'll consider higher.

I use a Prolimatech Megahalems along with a Noctua NF-P12 Fan. Cheaper than a True, slightly better performance and excellent mounting systems.

The Noctua NH-U12P SE2 Heatsink / Fan is also really good.

Both of these would probably ne not much more than USD $100 as they are not too expensive here in NZ.

I had been considering the Cooler Master V8. By the OCC review of the Noctua the temps got as high as 86C ( http://www.overclockersclub.com/reviews/noctua_nhu12p/5.htm ), whereas the V8 got about 55C ( http://www.overclockersclub.com/reviews/cm_v8/4.htm ). How well do those fair against the V8?

Thanks for the Windows 7 chart. Cooler Master V8 seems to outrank the other two coolers in review and ratings, so I think I'm going with that. Oddly enough, to step down to Kingston HyperX DDR3-1600 would cost the same, since it's $20 less but doesn't come with the $20 RAM cooler. I think my revised setup is then:

Intel i7-920 Bloomfield http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16819115202

Asus P6T Deluxe v2 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813131365

Any comments/suggestions? All are appreciated!
