My_Inner_Fred Posted November 28, 2009 Posted November 28, 2009 I want to upgrade from windows vista to windows 7, but my I cant because I have a 32-bit version of vista and a 64-bit version of Windows 7. Do I need to do a clean install? Does anyone know a good free back-up program? I want to avoid Microsofts back-up program. Do I need to do a clean install? Yes you need to do a clean install in order to upgrade to Windows 7 like you said you cannot upgrade from 32-bit to a 64-bit version of W7 or vice versa. Also is there a program that tells you what 32-bit programs you have in your computer that wont work with 64-bit? The Windows 7 upgrade adviser does a pretty good job at tell what will and will not work with W7 there is also google which is a pretty good reference. I don't know how your HDD is setup, but if I was in your case I'd just pop the DVD in and install. I keep all my documents on a second partition, thus they are not affected by an OS reinstall. If I want to backup(in case the HDD goes wrong), I just plug my second HDD and hit Ctrl+C & Ctrl+V. If you're not set like this, it would be a perfect time to do it. 00stevo Posted November 29, 2009 Posted November 29, 2009 I keep all my documents on a second partition Ive lost count of the amount of times ive told people/family/friends to always make a second partition when installing a new OS.For example, on my then new 500GB WD black,i made an 80GB partition for windows,and allocated the rest for data storage.All of my games,saves,pictures,music,torrents ,and whatever else go into the free space.So in the LIKELY event that somewhere down the line you feel the need to reinstall your OS,all of the mentioned stuff is saved.Makes sense to me anyway.
