Mod Idea

[Apocalypse]

Mod idea: take a scale model R2-D2 & throw your rig inside with a UPS (for when he's not connected to a wall socket), use some little speakers inside and have it play random whistles and beeps. Either wireless keyboard/mouse or have the plugs behind one of the pannels on the body. As for video, either plug it in somewhere on top or install a projector in the dome (where R2's hologram projector would be) and just display to a wall or screen.

 

Pros: Very cool for the Star Wars fan, portability (set up the droid with motor driven wheels and a remote control or just push him along), no need for a monitor if you use the projector idea

 

Cons: Expensive, time consuming to create, ventilation could be a problem, overenthusiastic children could tip it over and ruin your weekend, not sure if a scale model could fit an ATX board inside

It could be done, tho you'd have to find a large enough model....

 

You could also take stirofome (sp?) and have an artistic friend sculpt a R2D2 then attach that to a mini ATX case... tho as before you'd have to worry about ventilation and someone poking it and damaging the fome. :/

r2-d2 would probably look cooler if he has some vents and stuff, I think the model actually has grills (you know so the midget could breathe) you could probably have pretty good airflow by using the original design, hook up exhaust fans with tubes and stuff, that way when the thing is open it will look really cool too(not to mention effective.O)

There are also instructions for building them out on the net... If you were to do it yourself you could save some money AND make sure there is room inside the case for the components... still, you might want to think about using a micro-ATX board...

you should make r2-d2 full size, and then make it so that he can actually move, then get a remote control so you can drive your computer around, and finally write a program that has r2-d2 running around on his own when you want...ofcourse this includes an internal generator...gas power maybe?

This was my original idea, minus the part about having it roll around on its own. I was instead going to have it run off the UPS. Just have it roll itself right in to a LAN party, wheel up to a wall socket so you can plug him in, then start projecting on a wall and playing.

lol that'd be cool but your resolution and quality of picture would be pretty crappy, Id wrate build a screen into him and then open a door to see it or somthing.

Yeah, have a little LCD behind one of those 2 fan grill on the front. Either that or have a spot on top where you could connect a flat-screen, ala the attachment that R2 had on when he was serving drinks on the sand-barge in RotJ! :

Sounds to me like you all are trying ot build a robot, not a computer mod, ie built in generator and program to make little r2-d2 move around by himself, but still, sounds like a plan.
