Krieg1337 Posted October 31, 2009 Posted October 31, 2009 I keep reading in posts that this so called "TSMC" is having problems making cores for the HD 5xxx series. I was just wondering why they are having problems with this? Thanks

ccokeman Posted October 31, 2009 Posted October 31, 2009 40nm yields have been low since the HD4770s. They just cant get the yields high enough to supply demand!
Zertz Posted October 31, 2009 Posted October 31, 2009 I keep reading in posts that this so called "TSMC" is having problems making cores for the HD 5xxx series. I was just wondering why they are having problems with this? They're having problems with the 40nm process, it's just more obvious than ever now that they have a complex and high volume part to manufacture. NVIDIA is and will be facing similar issues, especially that their core is about 40% larger. Why? I think that's exactly what TSMC is trying to figure out I wouldn't be surprised if R800 was ATI's last core to be strictly manufactured by TSMC. By the time R900 (or whatever they call it) is ready, GlobalFoundries will be ready.
ccokeman Posted October 31, 2009 Posted October 31, 2009 Hopefully they do not have the same issue!
Baulten Posted October 31, 2009 Posted October 31, 2009 TSMC is the manufacturer that has been making GPUs for ATI for a while. They've had major issues with the 40nm node, so the yields are quite low. However, HD 5750/5770 supply is fine, so I am starting to think ATI is to blame for the shortage. I think they overordered the 5750/5770 dies and underordered for 5870/5850. They've claimed yields should be improving soon so who knows. All I know is it is damned frustrating.
