DexRain Posted October 27, 2009 Posted October 27, 2009 So, been awhile since I've been here, I blame work, RO, Magic, Anime, and my ADHD haha Anyways, seems my luck holds true once again on trying to save for a big computer upgrade (cars eating all my money lol) So I figured I'd do a little upgrade this time instead of a full rebuild. So I'm now the proud owner of a pair of these 9600 GSO's that I picked up for $35 each after MIR and an Antech Earthwatt's 650 watt PSU Definitely a big step up from my old Radeon X850XT Platinum Edition, and my 400w peak CoolerMaster PSU. Turns out that psu was actually holding my overclock back (not enough juice to run everything in my case) and I've since managed to push my little Athlon 4000+ up to a stable 2.85GHz, hit 2.9 but it would BSOD =[ I think I did alright for only spending ~$140 Looking into throwing an Opteron 170 into this bad boy as one final upgrade before sorting out all my car trouble and saving to build a monster (since they seem to be getting cheaper and I've heard they're more reliable than their Athlon X2 counterparts, being server CPU's and all) What do you guys think (and yes, I know S939 is oldschool ) I've also heard you can unlock disabled pipelines on those 9600's and, with a bit of overclocking, have them running pretty much on par with a 9800GT, but methinks that's a question for a different thread. paulktreg Posted October 27, 2009 Posted October 27, 2009 I have a couple of 9600GSO's, not indentical to yours, but they make great folders so I don't have them SLIed. I thought they had 96 pipelines and that's it, could be wrong. Cheers Paul
Crazy_Nate Posted October 27, 2009 Posted October 27, 2009 Aye, should be a pretty big step up from the X850XT (I had mine at PE clocks with a silencer on it). My brother is still running it. New cards have just come very far from there. Unlock disabled pipelines on the 9600GSOs? Maybe on the 6800's (ha, yeah, I remember), but I haven't heard of any of that recently. They're called stream processors now I like the older Opterons...they're great. I still have a 144 that'll probably do 2.9 on stock volts. I haven't tried with my 180. It just sits stock. I've run it 24/7 for a long time. Not a hickup
DexRain Posted October 27, 2009 Posted October 27, 2009 Might have been someone blowing smoke about the disabled pipelines (or i could have been uber tired and got it mixed up with something else XD ) They do clock up pretty nicely but the temps worry me ( especially with them being as close together as they are on my EVGA nForce4 SLi board ) I guess new cards just run hotter though? I don't think I ever saw my X850 above 51.C under load, these thing IDLE at around 50.C o.o I am going to put a higher flow fan in the side of my 1200 soon though, the one that's in there now is an led fan meant to run silent, give me a dang leaf blower, I'll just turn up my music! paulktreg Posted October 27, 2009 Posted October 27, 2009 I put some Zalman coolers on mine but it was wasted money as they still hit 70.C plus when folding! Cheers Paul
Fight Game Posted October 27, 2009 Posted October 27, 2009 (edited) About the mod...I thought the 9600gso had to be a 384mb edition, but it may work with 512mb as well, i don't know. http://www.techarp.com/showarticle.aspx?artno=610&pgno=1 "So, when you look for a GeForce 9600 GSO, make sure it has 8 GDDR3 memory chips. That will give you a real good chance at modding the card into a GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB. With that said, there is no way for anyone to know for sure if the GeForce 9600 GSO has faulty stream processors or merely had them locked for marketing purposes." xchrissypoox Posted October 28, 2009 Posted October 28, 2009 I've always wanted a 9600GSO for a mini-itx build but mini-itxs with x16 slots are so darn expensive! Anyways congrats on your build how well is the sli scaling?
IVIYTH0S Posted October 28, 2009 Posted October 28, 2009 I used to have an x850xt too, loved that card. Oblivion put the hurting on it though, then I got the 8800GTX and my it blew my mind (and roughly $450 dollars outta my wallet ). glad your old trusty is running good. Those should be good folders like paul said (what resolution are ya running?)
DexRain Posted October 28, 2009 Posted October 28, 2009 (edited) Running 1600x1200 with a dual monitor setup and 1800x1440 in SLI, I really need to get me a pair of Mitsu Diamond Pro CRT's to replace my nice but mismatched CRT's. Usually gaming at 1600x1200, helps keep temps down and runs a bit smoother ^^; Yeah I loved that X850, still running strong in my bros rig (replaced an 8500GT LOL) I think I paid about $250 for it back when it was new, got a good run out of it too Oh and when I retire this thing for my new rig (whenever that may be /rollseyes I think I'll use this as a folding rig, (minus 2tb of HD space of course) I'm not sure my current second comp could handle it though ( 2.4GHz northwood core celeron with intel integrated graphics and 1gb of DDR ram in single channel ugh, spare parts ftw? ) Edited October 28, 2009 by DexRain

DexRain Posted October 28, 2009 Posted October 28, 2009 I doubt it could, I can smell the AGP slots from the celeron all the way from here Worse, cheap matx board with only PCI slots, the best I can ever hope for is a supremely overpriced 9400GS, and by that point I'd be farther ahead e-baying (or checking the marketplace here for) another S939 board with a PCI-E slot I could throw this 8500 and Sempron 3400 I have laying around into. But this pile-oparts was free, and it connects to the internet, which keeps my idiot friends from farking up my good computer XD Did I mention the OS is running off an 11 year old 1.6 gb ide hard drive with a 20gb storage drive?
