Simplest way to stream a webcam?

Recommended Posts

I don't know why I can't come up with some kind of easy solution, but how can I set up an office 'security' webcam so that it constantly streams a few fps to a private website for storage/active viewing via login?

I was thinking about just using a VNC and leaving the normal webcam viewing software on and recording it all with FRAPS or something of that nature, but there has to be a better way. Price isn't an issue, I really just need the best video feed I can (a VNC will not produce that). So, what exactly IS an IP Webcam, and is it able to do exactly what I need it to do?

Thanks,

An IP/network camera is what you're looking for. Plug it into your network, assign it an IP address and then it can be accessed remotely.

I know D-Link makes some, not sure who else. Google is your friend ;)

Hrm, so would I be connecting directly to the static (presumably) ip of the webcam itself to view the feed? That sounds easy enough!

That's correct

Not sure if this works or not but blue iris software works with all kinds of cameras and web cams and has a viewable web server, its only $50.00

Linksys does as well, and they also offer a wireless-g version.

Sounds neat, but you need a computer for that to work. One of the advantages of network cameras is that they are essentially plug and play and don't require any other hardware. If he has a PC available it's most likely the cheaper route though

Does anyone recommend any particular model IP Camera? I've been trying to find one between 75-200$. There are plenty of possibilities, but I don't really want to get stuck with a dud. I'm looking at the Cisco WVC210, not sure if you guys have experience with 'em or not - feedback pl0x? :D

You usually can't go wrong with Cisco, but I have no idea really... All I used was a basic D-Link consumer camera
