Hey guys,

I wanna build a Machine for My Mum as hers is now several years old. I was thinking of the below and want to know if anyone has built a system similar or knows of any problems with a components I have chosen. Also if anyone has any other ideas for about the same price that would also be much appreciated.

AMD Phemon II X2 545

Asus M4A785TD-V EVO

Corsair TwinX XMS3, DDR3 PC3-10666 (1333)

512MB XFX HD 4650

500 GB Western Digital WD5001AALS Caviar Black

400W Corsair Power Series PSU

Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro v2 !

Samsung SH-S223L/BEBE

ASUS TA-K51

I am planning to do this build with Windows 7 32bit home premium. The main uses for this Desktop are internet browsing, basic office work, and other general Home PC things with abit of gaming mixed in.

I may also overclock the Phenom abit but nothing too extreme

Thanks

Ben

Looks like a pretty good list. However, I'd say just run it off of the onboard graphics. If you really feel like gaming on it down the road, you can always decide to add a graphics card (and if you wait, you'll get more for your money anyways :P ) :thumbs-up:

PS. If that freezer 7 rev 2 is any similar the freezer 64 pro, it would be about the same as the stock heatsink that came with my 4400+ X2 or opty... If you're not overclocking immediately, you could probably hold this off for the time being, as well.

PPS. I don't see any reason not to go with 64-bit Windows 7.

Thanks Crazy, I may look into a different heatsink then as they look pretty similar. and the graphics card she could do without so I might give it a miss.

Insan3, AM3 socket phenoms use a DDR3 because its faster and My Mum has no use for 4gb of ram.

I am also not going with 64 bit 7 becasue it requires 2gb of ram to run and ATM DDR3 is to damn expensive to get more than 2gb

Thanks

Ben

You're right, an am3 processor can use ddr2 memory as well as ddr3, but it depends on the motherboard you choose as to which memory you have to have. Lower end DDR2 mobos can be quite a bit cheaper, but will eventually (soon) be phased out. A top of the line DDR2 mobo right now will cost within a few dollars of it's DDR3 counterpart, so your only savings would be the cost of the memory, at the expense of upgrade ability, eventually AMD will drop the DDR2 capability from it's line of processors and be only DDR3. When that happens, anyone wanting to upgrade processors on a DDR2 motherboard will be outta luck, and be forced to upgrade their motherboard also. Needless to say DDR2 and DDR3 memory are not interchangeable.

You could save a few bucks by going to a WD Green (GP series) hdd rather than the high performance black series. Both have a 32mb cache rather than the 16 mb the Blue series has, and for the usage you mentioned in your post, I doubt you would notice any difference, except perhaps a couple cents on your electricity bill.

Buy a PII 550 BE for OCing.. It's easier to just raise the multiplier.. ;) though 545 wouldn't be bad if you are looking at the 10 bucks saved!

WD Green might be a look! You save 6 bucks without any performance dip (considering your usage!)

If you a going with win7 + onboard 3/4GB is a must!

By all means 64-bit is the same as 32-bit!! Why not go 64-bit and have room for 4GB RAM?
