avididid Posted October 25, 2009 Posted October 25, 2009 Just introduced myself in a post in the newbie forum. My name is David and I want to put together a system myself. Let me tell you what I've been using. - A local computer shop put together a system for me in 2002 that included the following: AMD Athlon XP CPU Windows XP 512 MB memory 120 GB HD DVD RW drive I've never had any problems with this system. I THINK ITS IMPORTANT TO STATE WHAT I USE IT FOR!!. I only use this for Microsoft Excel & Word and also to convert DVDs to AVI files. I also use this to watch AVI files, it seems to work fine. I have a new 23 " monitor that looks great. The system will even play H264 files with no trouble. The main reason to build a new one is that it takes up to 10 hours to convert a 1 hr 45 min DVD to AVI. The conversions look great but I think it's time for something new. Another important point is to state what I don't need a system for: I DON'T USE MY HOME SYSTEM ON THE INTERNET AT ALL!! I DON'T PLAY VIDEO GAMES (EXCEPT FOR CHESSMASTER) I DON'T PLAY MUSIC OR SOUND FROM THIS SYSTEM (SOUND COMES FROM TV) So Here what I'm looking at now: The AMD New $100.00 4 Core Athlon CPU A Motherboard that can accept at least 8 gb of Ram, Has ATI Radeon HD3200 or HD4200 Graphics chip, 1 ESATA connection, 1 HDMI output, Can accept either DDR2 or DDR3 memory I'll be using Windows 7 as the operating system and will start off with probable 4 GB of DDR2 RAM A DVD RW drive Also a 1 TB internal hard drive I'll put a Blue Ray drive in maybe 2011 (No hurry) I don't need a monitor, sound card, Graphics card, floppy drive, Modem, Ethnet Card or Network Card. My main concern is finding the right motherboard. I Don't want to spend more then $250.00 for MB and CPU combined. If you have any suggestions I really would appreciate them. Even some suggestion on AMD Dual Core processors and MB combos would help. The main thing on the MB is the ATI graphics chip, the ESATA connections and the HDMI output - Thanks so much and look forward to suggestions!!!! dr_bowtie Posted October 25, 2009 Posted October 25, 2009 I think you are in the right direction here.. do you have a preference on brand for the mother board...? I prefer to use Gigabyte and Asus for stability reasons...and the onboard video will probably be better than 3200... not sure if you really need a quad core but just for the sake of asking what software do you use for converting DVD to .avi files? we need to know so we can find out whether the software will make use of the added cores.... 10 hours is a long time for conversion even on an Athlon XP cpu...I used a 2600 mobile at 2.6ghz and I remember an hour tops...? and I use a quad core now and I was down to 15minutes but that was ripping and burning...I dont do that anymore though..and for conversion I use AutoGK and it does very well...and doesnt take long but I try to set the file size even to 1gig for a 4gig dvd file size... do you have a CPU in mind...an actual link to something you have looked at will give us a better idea..some AMD quads use ddr2 and some ddr3...either way we can get you listed up with something very sweet.... AMD AM3 99.00 cpu http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16819103706 Although I would opt for this CPU as it is 42.00 more at 142.00 but has L3 cache that will help you... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16819103650 Mother board Gigabyte AM3 AMD/ATI onboard 4200 video with Sideport ram...(video allocated ram onboard) 94.00 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813128399 Ram DDR3 PC8500 OCZ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820227346 GSkill ddr3-1333 ram..vanilla ram but better yet...and free shipping! 79.00 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820231253 Hard drive 1TB drive... Samsung F1 very quiet and very nice 84.00 and free shipping ( I have 4 of these myself) PSU (power supply) OCZ modstream 59.99 but with rebate makes it 39.99 deal!!! toatal cost so far.... you're basically 475.00 with the 142.00 CPU and you still need Win7 and a case... N.E.A Posted October 25, 2009 Posted October 25, 2009 i think a board like gigabyte 785-ud2h or ud3h will be good and there are ddr3 versions just put T after the chipset also msi 785 and asus 785 evo too
nns Posted October 26, 2009 Posted October 26, 2009 Here's a build... You may go Phenom 720/810 for the added cache. I prefer WD but Samsung would be gr8 too. Plenty of options available for cases @ $
_TheAlexO Posted October 26, 2009 Posted October 26, 2009 Heres a build. I think you will make good use of the added cache from the 810. and with that, it still keeps you under your $250 budget for MB and CPU. (by $10) As for the MB, its a toss up between Gigabyte or ASUS.. im partial to the ASUS evo but either one you choose would be great. you can save $10 by going Gigabyte. For the case, based on what your using it for , im guessing you dont want a flashy case with a bunch of lights. which is why i picked the Antec 300. it has great cooling capabilities, is quiet, and cheap. Also looks classy. anyways, total is $652 INCLUDING Operating System and Case.
IVIYTH0S Posted October 27, 2009 Posted October 27, 2009 (edited) Athlon II X4 620 $99 Samsung 1TB for $80 Seagate 1TB for $80 If you want bluray now LG bluray burner $200 LG bluray reader $100 Pioneer bluray reader $100 If you want bluray later Samsung DVD Burner $30, there were a few cheaper but you can unlock these Samsungs to go really fast. (Though I guess you may be able to do the others, but I know for a fact you can with this series of Samsung since I did.) Just don't buy a Lite-On and you're good. Biostar 785G $60 Patriot Viper 1066mhz 5-5-5-15 $79 Edited October 27, 2009 by IVIYTH0S
