it depends.

if your new motherboard has the same chipset as your old motherboard, then no.

if it has a different chipset, there are ways to go about it that don't require you to reinstall your OS from scratch (windows repair install), however i'd recommend just backing up important docs and files and just do a clean install of the OS

depends on if its the same model or not. If it is not then it still may work the most drastic change i seen work was from an nvidia chipset with a socket 939 4800+ cpu to an ATI 790g chipset with an AM3 phenom 2. Both vista and XP booted and allowed for the option to install drivers then setup and worked perfectly. The vista took like 35 min. because it searched and found all the drivers by itself.

but you may or may not want to go through the hassle, it doesnt work like that all the time. A lot of the times the OS will load a driver to something no longer present and then blue screen. If that happens booting safe mode and deleting the problem driver might help. Then there is the issue of windoes itself not accepting the change and thinking its a complete other system that just the Harddrive was changed. the more things you have plugged into the mobo that are the same as the old system the more likely your OS will accept the new motherboard

if you can back up your files first you might should before you try it. Because there is no guarantee anything you do will help. I have seen it work many times, I have also seen it fudge up and need a fresh instal. If the mobo is similar, you probably wont have any issues.

You should be able to get away with simply removing your old chipset drivers and swapping the boards. Those chipsets are *very* similar especially with regards to the HDD controller (which is the main cause of problems when changing motherboards).

Yes there shouldn't be a problem!

You say you have 4GB (2 x 2GB) then you say 8GB? Have you got two sets? You'll need a 64 bit OS to make full use of 8GB.

You can't change the voltage in the bios?

It may help people to help you if you post your full system specification.

Cheers

Yes I have 8gigs, 2 4 gig sets, I'm running XP pro 64bit. On the Intel DG33BU you can't change settings at all, thats why I'm getting the new board. The E8500 is pretty fast and I have an ATI 4850 512meg vid card, 8gigs of muskin. Thanks for your help!
