Jchick87 Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 (edited) Hello everyone, I'm wondering if Hyperthreading will make a difference in gaming. It comes down to being able to buy a 5850 with an i7, or buying an i5 with a 5870. thanks Edited October 19, 2009 by Jchick87
actionstan Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 Hello everyone, I'm wondering if Hyperthreading will make a difference in gaming. It comes down to being able to buy a 5850 with an i7, or buying an i5 with a 5870. thanks well most people when they use a i7 for gaming they turn off the hyperhreading and just overclock the processor. but i do believe that if you get the i7 920 its still better even though it is more expsensive because 920 i7 use triple channel ram and i5 core systems still use dual channel ram. but if it was me buying it for a gaming rig i would get the i5 processor and the 5870 because the video card is your most important componet in a gaming computer. i would say if hyperthreading did help gaming at all it would be extremely minimal. youll probly never notice the difference between the i5 and i7 in gaming

I could try to push the i7-860 version into my budget, I'd still get Hyperthreading, but no Triple-Channel memory, yet still being able to keep the 5870 card. Would that be the best route to go you think? Also, if I go with a P55 chipset, I could run 4GB of memory, instead of 3, since the memory is so expensive for triple-channel. Does triple-channel make a huge difference in gaming, or any at all?

Does triple-channel make a huge difference in gaming, or any at all? are you overclocking at all? if so stay with the i5. triple channel is probly good, but once agian in gaming youll never notice the difference.. core i7 with hyper threading enabled, and triple channel memory would be better for like video editing. if your overclocking the processor the i5 with 4 gigs of ram and the 5870 would be ideal.. if your not overclocking the i7-860 might be the better option. id personally go with the i5(and overclock the hell out of it) and 4 gigs of ram and just grab the 5870 and if you have extra money left over save it for a game or somthing. im upgrading aswell soon so im ither getting the i5 or the phenom ii 955/940 just havent decided yet(a i5 processor can be pushed to 4.0ghz on air pretty easy i believe extremely high overclockers) Edited October 19, 2009 by actionstan

Why would the i5 be better for overclocking than the i7-860? i7-860 is already at 2.8 out of the box, so wouldn't that be better? Fight Game Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 since most games still do not use more than 1-2 cores and most are more dependant on the gpu, rather than cpu, then obviously i5/5870!

I didn't realize you turn off hyperthreading when overclocking, why is that? But yeah, I'll save the 80 bucks and use it towards other better parts of my build then. I have the games, as well as some Raptor HDD's, so I'm not going to buy an SSD yet. I'll probably use it towards a bigger monitor, and better case. Anyways, can you reccommend me some heatsinks for the i5? I'm looking to buy from Newegg. Thx

Thx yea stick with the raptors. a bigger monitor would be sweet to put some use to the 5870s or a nice case with alot of fans. a good heat sink probly http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16835887023 direct heatpipes, i love heatsinks with direct heatpipes or... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16835118051 seems like it would be a nice one too
