Overclocking 4870 makes my screen flicker

When I oc my gpu from the os with a program it works fine, finishes all test and benchmarks that I throw at it. OC'd clocks are 800, 1100 btw.

When I flash the bios, it makes my screen flicker. Why is that?

Id say your cpu oc is too high and i never oc gpu mem more than 100mhz.Oc'ing a gpu just isnt worth the risk nowadays imo.If anything,i go 100 on the core and 100 on the mem if i feel like it,but not more.Downclock some stuff and see how it goes then.

Does my cpu oc really have anything to do with gpu oc?

Also... I also think that the gpus today oc too little, but I was still willing to give it a try. I dunno if it'd pay off if I make my oc lower. Is 100mhz worth shortening the life span of this card?

Ah, another thing. How about voltmoding it? That could help oc it good...I think.

Its all about having a stable system imo.Oc'ing a gpu really doesnt have much effect on your fps.Your looking at 10 extra fps for a potentially risky overclock that might damage your gfx card.Imo,the only people that need to oc a gpu is people with crap gaming cards.I.E.:8600gt,9500gt,HD 3650,4350 etc etc.If you have a very capable gfx card like a hd 4850 or 9800gtx,you really dont need to oc past what i already said.Cpu oc'ing on the other hand has considerable gains, and is worth doing, but you need to have a sixth sense so you know when to stop or back down imo.Good luck!

if its doing it when you flash id just go back to maximum overclock via cc panel thats what i do with my card.. and overclocking the video card when it comes to games is much better than overclocking a cpu.. and overclocking that card as far as catlyst lets you shouldnt shorten the life of a 4870.

Have you tried increasing the pcie frequency in the bios, try that. Normally its 100 value, try 101 and see if it works. If the gpu OC is giving you flickers or artifacts after oc'ing then its unstable no matter what even if it passed benchmarks. I normally do 10 loops of 3dmark benching none stop starting with '01, '03, '05 and '06. If I passed those tests then on to game benches like Crysis and or FC2.

Check Your Cords. I cannot stress it enough. Heh, once i thought i had a bad card, cable was loose.

May be a terrible suggestion on my part.
