Brown/green Athlon?

I am currently running the following:

Biostar MVIG pro,2400+,(2.0ghz 266fsb)stock

The cpu is green ,which confuses my project..

 

My project is to unlock the cpu to be able to overclock it,

Another weird thing is my mobo in bios has settings to OC which seem to

overclock the cpu ,and when i do oc it,windows recognizes the cpu as 2600+ 2.1ghz...But as for what i know my cpu is locked......

 

My 2 question are:

 

1-Is it possible that my cpu is really oc'ed without me unlocking it?

2-What is the difference of me trying to unlock a brown and green athlon?

1. Yes, you can overclock a locked cpu just fine by raising the fsb, or by using an nforce 2 motherboard which unlocks the multipliers for you. How did you overclock? Windows doesn't lie...sounds like you raised the multiplier from 15x to 16x, and the multi did change. That's a successful overclock.

 

2. The difference is the packaging for the processor. The brown ones are easy to unlock because you can just paint the bridges. The green ones are hard to unlock because you have to fill the pits on the bridges with something non-conductive first, and then paint them. Either way I don't think it matters, because it appears as though you can change the multiplier anyway.

im getting a 2500+ today, can u still find the brown ones?

I don't think that the barton core ever came in that style. You're most likely going to get the latest version: the green one that has been laminated. It's practially impossible to unlock them, but supposedly it can be done.

i have the 2700+ and it is unlocked. U do not need to paint over or anything to unlock it. The new Chip sets like nforce2 uplock it automaticy. This only works with the bartons and the T-breds I think

hey man,

Eva_Unit_0,im curious on knowing how did you overclock your 2400+ to 2.3ghz.?

that sounds crap**ing hot,i wanna do tha to mines,i got some fast cooling fan so im sure temp wont be an obstacle.

 

I have a Biostar MVIG pro,it has some weird option in the Bios config.

 

The way i overclocked my locked cpu is just by raising some numbers which look like this (133/33 to 144/36)so it went from 2.0ghz to 2.14ghz.

 

my questions are:

1-did u unlock your cpu physically?(extremes as 2.3ghz sounds hot)

2-since my pc wont start if i raise higher than 144/36 do you suggest unlocking the cpu myself will make the difference?

True, the nforce 2 unlocks the t-bred/barton chips. However, the recent batches of bartons (week 39 and after, at least for 2500+ chips) cannot be unlocked, even by the nforce2.

 

 

eliu170: First, I've got an nforce2 based mobo, which makes overclocking a lot easier. As tjohnson stated, I didn't need to unlock it. I could just change the multi at will. Also, because of the nforce2 chipset I didn't have to worry about the agp/pci clocks. Anyway, I just set the vcore to 1.7V and started climbing. I could get up to 180 x 12.5 = 2250mhz on 1.7V, but I really wanted to get 200fsb. I replaced my powersupply (my voltages were way off...13V on the 12V rail. I got an antec truepower 430), raised the vcore to 1.75V, and climbed it up to 11.5 x 200 = 2300mhz. It still has more left in it too. It appears to run stable at 210 x 11.5 = 2415mhz, but I haven't done too much testing at that speed yet.

It seems to me like you've got a non-nforce2 mobo, so yes, unlocking your cpu would help you oc a lot. It might not raise your actual maximum clock speed, but it would allow for much higher fsb speeds. (because you could then lower the multi) I think that speedstrip would be the easiest way to unlock a t-bred.
