Left 4 Dead 2 Racism? Lol....no...pff

QUOTE:

This is unbelievable. I've seen people try and find racist undertones in harmless entertainment before, but The Houston Chronicle's Willie Jefferson takes home the prize for making the most ridiculous and convoluted racism link in history. According to him, Left 4 Dead 2 is "disturbing" because "several" of the zombies are African-American. Yep, that's right -- you can't even have ONE black zombie without somebody crying racism.

"I am disturbed by the growing trend of racist undertones that are cropping up in video games," writes Jefferson. "One of the games that comes to mind is Left 4 Dead 2 ... Set in New Orleans, players will have to fight their way through hordes of zombies - with several of them who appear to be African-Americans. When I saw the first trailer for the game, all I could think about was Hurricane Katrina and the aftermath."

So let me get this straight ... Valve is now wrong to include a single black zombie in the game? I literally cannot believe I just read that someone is upset over "several" black zombies -- not an entire army of black ones, just several black ones amidst a bunch of white ones. Has society really gone so f*cking stupid that we can't do anything anymore without the race card being played?

Jefferson also attacks Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood for daring to feature a Confederate officer as the main hero: "The Confederacy, as far as I am concerned, wanted to keep their cheap slave labor and the like. I can not stand the Confederate flag... To me, the flag represents hate -- and offends me and many others to no end. [it] made me wonder how much research Ubisoft did for this game ..."

I think society has really gone too far with these pathetic attempts to find racism in everything. When you're saying L4D2 is racist because some black people happen to be IN it, and when you're saying a game is racist for not automatically portraying every single Confederate soldier as a babyraping Nazi (which is, itself, a rather bigoted viewpoint), then you've lost your grip on reality.

Jefferson ought to be ashamed of himself for obscuring real issues of racism with this "cry wolf" nonsense.

END OF QUOTE.

Ok...seriously...what are they thinking of saying it's racist. Are they stupid??? I really hate people that live under rocks and they suddenly come out and think they know everything and start judging...everything they can...MOSTLY COMPUTER GAMES. (just like the time that mass effect was on the news and they said it was porn and kids were watching it and w/e). But back to the point. It would be racist to NOT include black models/characters in the game as it mgiht come to mind that they don't like black people and that it would make the game bad.

There are those that are older (in the 30's or so) and understand games...and there are those that don't and are noobs basically (my mom is a perfect example) so all of them just criticize game. Not understanding how much work and time and so many more things went into making each one(well the good ones). Makes me sick when I hear ppl say that games teach you nothing and are a waste of time. What I'm trying to say is that I don't see how there could be people that allow themselves to say that the game is criticize when they have no idea. Making each next game more and more realistic is what keeps everyone going. Unless the world was 100% white ppl then I don't see how l4d2 is racist. Putting african-americal models in the game is a nice touch that suggests that more thought went in making it, and taking more things into consideration.

As the gaming world grows more and more, with more people joining it every day, less wil be left behind in time untill they fade away.

Please discuss this very interesting for me topic.

it's only because real Zombies dont discriminate...they dont care about skin color or your religion...

this guy should feel lucky that the zombies chose to enslave some african american right along with the rest of the zombies...hell I think I seen some illegal immigrant zombies in there as well...

I think this guy should feel good that the zombies didnt choose to segregate and leave teh African American totally out of the game...:)

It's the game I'm concerned about. The ppl I could care less about(all ppl, not just a certain onces because there are different critics that don't know anything). Different races in it makes it better because it's a simple detail which might not be a big deal by it's self, but that's what makes it good Games will only get better and real-er.

Valves response to the accusation:

A Houston Chronicle blog post caused quite a stir a few weeks back when it tried to make Left 4 Dead 2's New Orleans setting sound racist, or at the very least, insensitive to the Hurricane Katrina disaster. While visiting Valve this past week, we asked how they felt about the accusations, and Left 4 Dead writer Chet Faliszek was quite frank with his response.

"Utter insanity," says Faliszek, when sharing his opinion on the controversy. "There are mixed races of zombies, there are all different races of zombies that you shoot, and since we placed it in New Orleans, that makes it racist? I honestly re-read the paragraph about five times ... but when two of the characters in your game are African-American, it's a weird thing to be accused of. We're like, 'how does this work'?

"... As far as Katrina goes, if you go down to New Orleans, Katrina's still going on. I mean, it's messed up, it is crazy that the city is still in the state it's in, and we treat that with the utmost respect. Our CEDA thing is not some subversive commentary on anything. This is a videogame, those are real people's lives, we are not trying to make a statement with that ... It's a place we love, it's dear to our hearts. We would not cheapen it. It's not a brick-for-brick representation of New Orleans; it's a fictional version, and I love that city."

Most would agree that the "controversy" over Left 4 Dead 2's setting was ridiculous, but it's good that Valve reiterates just how bizarre the accusations were. It really goes to show that you can't do anything involving black people these days without some moron (usually a guilty white person) screaming about racism.

For more of Chet's comments on this subject, and all things Left 4 Dead, keep hitting up Destructoid. We have loads more discussion, a full interview, and a close look at some videogame content, all coming over the next few days.

END.

Valve simply pwnd all the noob critics 10k. Just like they pwn ps3.

This is what we get today. If you say one bad thing to a black person racism will be cried out. Talk about being equal <_<

This guy is a moron, one of those people who is actually racist against white people. Its a game, get over it.

You know this guy fails in the L4D2 part, so its ok to shoot white zombies but not black zombies? This guy should be sued for racism.

This is perfect. I am taking a race, class and gender class at the moment and according to the book we are using the white man is the devil. I really don't know what more anyone can do to fix race relations. There is a HALF black president now. The race card seems to be used more now then ever.
