ksmani Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 I think it's time for a new pc !! the current one is: built nov 2003 and stuffs added from time to time.. antec 300 case shuttle ab60n mobo p4 2.6 ghz over clocked to 3.07 ghz right from day "1" for 5 years in a row without issues, then to 2.6ghz because of reboot issues. thermal take big typhoon cpu cooler (socket 478) ati radeon 9200se 128mb zalman VF900-Cu LED vga cooler 3gb ram enermax 500 W power supply (60gb ide+ 80gb ide + 500gb sata) + (250gb external) hdds win happague tv tuner samsung dvd /cd writer This one, i am planning to give to my wife so that she can do unlimited "virus accumulation" I have another Pentium D 925, GEForce 8600 GTS 256mb, 1gb ram, ~300 gb hdd, system (an year old) which I use as the media server, for my PS3. I like to use this as a regular pc, and build a new one for media server. If some of you experts think this is good enough, pls. advise. Otherwise, guide me where to start. At the mother board ? or at the cpu ? I would like to keep the new one for at least 5 years... or so. So, a near 1000$ budget is what i have in mind. Pls, suggest. OCFreak Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 I would think this ... for $950 is a decent system for years to come, and room to go:
nns Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 (edited) Nice build put up by OCFreak but the mobo and RAM need to be changed: RAM needs to be dual channel instead of triple channel Mobo P7P55D PRO would let you have dual crossfire or SLI!! As for the GPU you could consider GTX260 or GTX275 too!! Edited October 17, 2009 by nns
ksmani Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 also i forgot to tell that: i will not play games in this pc; will watch movies or other streaming video once in a while use to watch tv using the tv tuner (rarely).. will run IDE such as Eclipse or Netbeans, with heavy read write into an oracle or mysql database installed on the same pc. Jump4h Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 In that case , a 5770 is overkill. A 8800GT / 9800GT will do fine
OCFreak Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 Woops .. good catch. Same memory though http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820146777 The ASUS board is nice, I have had great luck with MSI, though. OCFreak Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 In that case , a 5770 is overkill. A 8800GT / 9800GT will do fine Not if he is wanting it for 5 years, it has much more future-proof support and will provide excellent playback quality for video/audio for years to come. And if he wants to play a game or two he could without a hitch.
nns Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 I'd say a silent GPU (fanless) would be good, he can always upgrade the GPU. Also an X58 platform would be better since that would permit some nice upgrades in 5 years!! He can use the $ 100 saved on the GPU to go X58!! Maybe the OP should wait until SATA 3.0 if he's looking @ 5 years!!
iOverclock Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 I5 use dual channel not triple channel so get 2gb, 4gb etc not 6.
brandonwh64 Posted October 18, 2009 Posted October 18, 2009 Why not a AMD 965 Black Edition machine? that would be cheaper and just as fast
Mikesnow Posted October 18, 2009 Posted October 18, 2009 (edited) I'd say keep your current case, PSU, optical drive's and stuff to start with they can be upgraded later on pretty easily. And would allow a little more flexability with cash to get you better stuff. I would prolly go with something like this. Motherboard : Evga x58 Micro = $199.99 Processor : Intel Core I7 920 = $279.99 (I think I saw these at microcenter for 209.99 the other day BTW) Ram : 6GB Corsair XMS3 = $179.99 Video: EVGA GT220 SSC = $89.99 HDD : 2x Seagate 1tb HD = $179.98 they are like 90 dollars each if you case has an area to allow for a 120mm fan on the back then for the CPU cooler I would use is : Corsair h50 = $79.99 if your not ever going to overclock the cpu then just use the Stock fan that comes with the i7 tbh. Would roughly run $1000 and thats a pretty stout system, with flexability to upgrade in the future. If you shop around I bet you could get most if not all of this for less then 1000 dollars. Thats my suggestion any way. EDIT : Thats what I would use for your pc. As for a media server it mostly depends how much space you need storage wise I use a WD - My Book World Edition 1TB Remote Access Storage System $169.99 as a file server / media server I also extended mine with an aditional 1tb my book that was like 90 dollars so I have 2tb total, they do make them in a 2 tb model now for 300 dollars for the remote access one so you could have up to 4 tb storage media server for about 450 bucks that way. if you need that much storage that is. Setup to a PS3 is simple to. Plug the my book into your router vis ethernet cable. load filaes on it via the ps3 or your pc, and thats it. Takes longer getting it outta the box then it is to setup. N.E.A Posted October 18, 2009 Posted October 18, 2009 I would think this ... for $950 is a decent system for years to come, and room to go: except i think nzxt m59 or lexa s will be far better Why not a AMD 965 Black Edition machine? that would be cheaper and just as fast i5 kills every amd cpu , the right suggestion goes with 955 940 and 965 is not cheaper than i5 ( last i checked ) and 965 in nothing new it is just 955 with 0.2 more , the same thing with 940 0.2 less than 955 , but 955 can run ddr3 that is why it is the best choice in amd as ddr2 is getting expensive i agree with you about amd will be better since it is cheaper and will deliver almost the same performance by doing this you can get better gpu
