flareback Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 Looking to get a new hdd for a linux install. I don't need huge amounts of data, I don't really have a lot of music or movies. I could live just fine with a 40 Gig drive. Anywho, does anybody have any suggestions for a good reliable drive or brands they like more than others? I was looking at newegg and came across this WD Caviar Blue and the Seagate Barracuda. Way more space than I need but there isn't much of a price difference between the 250 and 80 GB but the 250 has more cache. I'm not up on all the flavors of drives any help on a reliable drive for a linux install would be appreciated.
CheeseMan42 Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 There isn't any special type of drive needed for Linux. Anything that will work with Windows will work with Linux.
Andrewr05 Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 AGREED Just find an old computer and yank a 30 gig from it, your bound to be able to find an old computer somewhere...
The Smith Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 AGREED Just find an old computer and yank a 30 gig from it, your bound to be able to find an old computer somewhere... I've just done that. I got an old 20GB IDE drive and installed Vista on it. It's slow as hell. Do you have enough money for a SSD? The 80GBs are not that expensive anymore.... I actually have a couple of 400 GB drives that don't seem to work well with Linux. They work great with Win 7 but give me all sorts of errors while installing and booting linux. see this thread for my errors with the drive. WhenKittensATK Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 (edited) If your going to be spending nearly $50 for those, you might as well get this $55 Refurb Seagate 750GB. http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?InvtId=ST3750330AS-R Add this code at checkout to get $5 off: 750DEAL http://www.geeks.com/pix/2009/750DEAL.html Geeks has a 7.5/10 on reseller ratings, but I've never bought anything from them yet. http://www.resellerratings.com/store/Computer_Geeks_1 Edited October 17, 2009 by Krazyxazn
