suchuwato Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 OMG I'm upgrading. I'm going Intel again, so i7 - I suppose the 920 is the logical choice. ... but a Motherboard and RAM is annoying me as there's a plethora of similarly specced and priced stuff out there. I don't need Crossfire or SLi or any other fancy crap that doesn't improve performance, however I would like a board with good overclockability and reliablity, as well as a decent array of the usual gear. I'd also like 6gb of memory, whatever is pretty fast and tight, but affordable - is it still true that there's not much to be gained with fancy stuff, or has it changed with DDR3? Anybody have suggestions? I'm not on a particular budget, but I'm very short on cash at the moment, so I'm looking for that age old bang-for-buck! Thanks Oh, I'm not keeping my graphics or hdd, but that's for another thread!
magekyou Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 Are you REALLY REALLY sure you want i7? You said your low on cash so your my type of "customer" Will you video encode/zip dvd-rip or anything like that? Because anything other then that, you won't see no difference NOWHERE. My dad has a Q9450, and his i7 comp doesnt feel faster one bit (like more responsive or thing like that, don't expect that), unless we do some VMWare workstation programming or things like that Can you tell me what your computer will be used for? (I will not propose a Q9450 btw.)
GabrielT Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 For ram I would ask how much you wanna spend? You can spend more but the actual difference you will see will be slight at best. $165 DDR3 2000 9-9-9-24 $156 DDR3 1600 7-8-7-20 $129 DDR3 1333 7-7-7-20 I don't know about the good X-58 boards, someone else take those. rourkchris Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 Asus Rampage II GENE http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813131371 (I know you're in the UK but this is so you can see the features) At $219.99 shipped it's not the cheapest but gives all of the overclocking features of much more expensive boards. It may fit your needs.

suchuwato Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 All I use my PC for is video work, motion graphics and 3D stuff, so yeah it is a worthwhile upgrade <_< Yeah, that ASUS looks to be a decent board, thanks Anyone else have suggestions/arguements? I don't think I can afford i9 when it comes out, so I don't see any point in waiting...

The Smith Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 I'd go with DDR3-1600. The one Gabriel suggested sounds good. On Phenom II platforms there are noticeable gains to faster RAM, but I am not sure about i7. I'd bet the triple-channel setup already provides the needed bandwidth.
