soke73 Posted January 7, 2004 Posted January 7, 2004 wassup all, getting my new ATI card (bye bye nvidia) hopefully tomorrow(1/8)from newegg. from what i understand these cards run hot. was thinking of some cooling solutions like the zalman or the TT. been reading some reviews on the vantec fan card. seems like an easy way to cool a vga card, instead of the process needed to install the other 2 vga coolers from zalman or TT. from the reviews, the vantec fan card seems to do a good job of moving the hot air away from the vga, i got 4 case fans by the way so i think i could move that hot air out. tell me what you guys think
Guest Ballz2TheWallz Posted January 7, 2004 Posted January 7, 2004 ok the giant heatsinks suck the fanless one even seemed to get worse temps than stock. if you want BIG get a vantec iceberq 4 or a vga silencer
soke73 Posted January 7, 2004 Posted January 7, 2004 thanks for the reply, ok.. i was trying to stay away from modding my new card, just a little nervous about screwing up a 300$ card. i checked out the vantec iceberg 4 and it seems that its not that difficult to install. has anyone added a vantec iceberg 4 on the ati's?.. and if so: 1. how was installation 2. cooling perfomance, current oc of card from stock. appreciate the help.... Guest Ballz2TheWallz Posted January 7, 2004 Posted January 7, 2004 what card are you getting? some ocz ramsinks would cool your ram nicely escpesially with a speactrum in the next slot
soke73 Posted January 7, 2004 Posted January 7, 2004 i went with the standard ATI Radeon 9800pro 128mb for $298 shipped to nyc from newegg... I could of spent a few $ more on other brands such as hercules or the new sapphires with upgraded stock cooling.. but i'll upgrade the cooling myself with some of the options that are out there.. noise is not much of concern.. play games 95% times with the headphones on anyway. i'll check on those ocz ramsinks / vantec fan card the vantec iceberg 4 sounds cool, but only comes with 4 ramsinks.. maybe i could buy another 4 from ocz?... what do you think? mazakman Posted January 7, 2004 Posted January 7, 2004 You could make your own card cooler. I've made quite a few of these with single 80mm fans, in fact Bishop has one that I made for him with 2 80mm fans on it. They are simple enough to make and will out perform the Vantec card cooler if you use more powerful fans. Paranoid Posted January 7, 2004 Posted January 7, 2004 I just installed an Iceberq4 on my 9600XT. I used the included RAMsinks, and 4 tweakmonter RAMsinks. It is cool to the touch, so it is doing a good job. I'm going to overclock tonight to test the cooling.
EternityEight Posted January 8, 2004 Posted January 8, 2004 has anyone added a vantec iceberg 4 on the ati's?.. and if so: 1. how was installation 2. cooling perfomance, current oc of card from stock. appreciate the help.... 1) Irritating at first -- it wouldnt fit my care (i.e i could get the push pins to line up becuase a capacitor was in the way) even though it said it would fit my card, (powercolour 9600pro_ in the end i just used arctic silver alumina (not jb-weld ) i mixed it with 50% ceramique. i figured it would me the bond less permamant... i used the alumina to put the ramsinks on too..... 2)I managed to get 20 mhz on core and 20 mhz increase on memory, but i didnt go any higher that that because thats as high as the slider on the app i was using would go ... so it worked very well.... I forget teh numbers.. but it was a pretty big increase from stock, The hsf on the card orginally was really sucky tho -- so if youve got a good cooler, you wont notice as much as a difference

Tempesta Posted January 8, 2004 Posted January 8, 2004 I found this on FrozenCPU website... http://www.frozencpu.com/cgi-bin/frozencpu/cac-01.html Anyone have any experience with that? Seems to be simple and effective, like the mod Mazakman posted.
mazakman Posted January 8, 2004 Posted January 8, 2004 Those are pretty nifty too, but they are mounted perpendicular to the card, where the mod that I mentioned blows onto the gpu itself. ( in a PCI slot just below the video card) You can cool both sides of the video card with that one.
