Phil Posted October 3, 2009 Posted October 3, 2009 A noob question about CPU's. What happens if you put a CPU rated for 2MB L2 cache in a MB rated at 1MB? Does it work but only at 1MB, or would it just not work?
Zertz Posted October 3, 2009 Posted October 3, 2009 What happens if you put a CPU rated for 2MB L2 cache in a motherboard rated at 1MB? Does it work but only at 1MB, or would it just not work? Motherboards don't care about the processor's cache, it either supports the CPU or not
Phil Posted October 4, 2009 Posted October 4, 2009 Thanks. But why then do they list it in the specs?

Phil Posted October 4, 2009 Posted October 4, 2009 I'm thinking mostly of prebuilts like a Dell. I believe that Foxconn would be the manufacturer.
Zertz Posted October 4, 2009 Posted October 4, 2009 Those are specifications, not a CPU support list. All those 5xx P4's have 1MB of cache and that particular Dell only shipped with those processors. It just reflects what you should see on a stock Dimension 4700

Phil Posted October 4, 2009 Posted October 4, 2009 So I guess if the board supports a socket 775 P4, any cache will work then.
Fight Game Posted October 4, 2009 Posted October 4, 2009 unless you are refering to the amount of memory for the bios? BIOS chip (NVRAM) 4-Mb
Zertz Posted October 4, 2009 Posted October 4, 2009 So I guess if the board supports a socket 775 P4, any cache will work then. They should have a CPU support list somewhere, it doesn't necessarily support every P4 out there
Phil Posted October 4, 2009 Posted October 4, 2009 If they have a support list, they aren't sharing. Thanks for the info.
