good mobo+proc for under <$120

Recommended Posts

Hello. I'm trying to build a budget system without, you know, sacrificing too much. It will be used for some gaming but nothing real heavy.

I already have a HD4670 and a Corsair 400w. This deal looks pretty good but it expires soon...

I was also considering the fan-favorite E5200. Apparently it has been permanently removed from Newegg and other sites are selling it at ridiculous prices. So make that the E5300. I was considering paring that with a Gigabyte G31 board:

Those 2 would cost $122. I also found this little guy:

1MB L2 cache sorta scares me. But 3.4Ghz on stock cooling sounds awesome for the price.

Are any of these worth it? If anyone else can dig up some other solution, that would be awesome, thanks.

I don't really like the Intel 775 socket..!!

The AMD seems good for the price and better than "THE Little Guy" 3200.. If you can somehow get in $ 178 - $10 mail-in rebate, then there's the PhenomII 550 (I know my suggestion may seem ridiculous considering the budget given...)

What other components are you looking to buy?

How do you actually unlock the second core? are there tutorials online or something? I'll probably go for the 240 though since I don't want to risk being stuck with a dud single core.

As for other parts I'll probably get 4GB ram and some hard drive and cheap optical drive. Will wait for windows 7 to buy the rest.

Wait for Windows 7? The requirements are already out and so is the RTM.. What are you looking for?

I'd suggest a cut in the RAM, 2 GB would generally suffice, go for a better processor!!
